yeah, we got some sacks but most were coverage sacks or when we caught the QB on the run

it also helps to play a team missing 3 OL starters and have one of the replacements also get hurt in the game

we wont get anything close to 5 sacks next week

consistent pressure is and especially on 3rd downs...if you cant pressure people when you know they are gonna pass, you are gonna get beat

we got sacks but, the sacks were against the MOST SACKED QB in the nfl through 16 weeks..............................

Forget pressure, we can't cover anyone. Our linebackers are the worst coverage linebackers in history, and our Corners are so overrated, it's pathetic.

I like Newman, but Newman has benifited from not being throwing at alot, it hurts but it's the truth. I think we have the talent, but somehow our scheme is flawed.

The sacks weren't exactly the type of sacks you wanted. You want to get sacks where the QB has almost no time once he hits his last step with his right foot on his dropback. I think we got 2 of those, but the others were mostly coverage sacks and usually Kitna either looking to scramble or rolling out of the pocket and then getting "sacked." In the second half we barely got any pressure at all and the Lions:

1. Throw a lot

2. And use a ton of 5 and 7 step dropbacks.

Also, Bradie James was terrible again. They threw at him a lot, but they decided to use Furrey more whereas most teams would use their RB or TE's at Bradie. It's tough to defend when the opposing team pretty much has an easy 6-10 gains they can pick up the majority of the time they pass the ball.

Oh for the good ol days.. like a month ago..when "knowing" what was wrong was so simple.. no pass rush and weak safeties.

Now every week it's something new.. no pass rush.. then James and Fowler playing bad, then the safeties playing bad.. now today Newman and Glenn.

Bingo. We got them in several 3rd and longs with pressure, but we never blitzed on third and long. We rushed 4 guys almost every time.

Whats really the problem is our third down defense. We can't stop not even the worst team in the league from converting....no intensity no heart. very very very dissapointing.

It isn't the most important because you can't just focus solely on sacking the QB at the risk of not stopping the run or the pass.

But, it's still very important. 19 of the last 20 teams that went to the Super Bowl had at least 40 sacks in the regular season (the 2001 Pats still had 38 sacks). We've averaged 30 sacks a season under Zimmer. In essence, you'd better be pretty good at sacking the QB if you want to go to the Super Bowl. Stopping the pass is the most important thing on defense, but sacking and pressure are usually the main ingredients in getting that done. Zimmer doesn't know how to coach or strategize a defense that can sack the QB at a good rate and I think he's been given every possible opportunity or avenue to field a team with a good pass rush. Getting rid of him isn't the answer, but it's a step in the right direction.
