Pretty interesting read if you ask me, didn't realize Jimmy Johnson was aiming for a LB instead of Emmitt.

I remember the draft and if I remember correctly the LB they had targeted was drarfted # 4. I can't remember his name but I think New England drafted him. Then the trading conversations started and finally they moved up and took Emmitt.

I could be confused about the # 4 because it could be that Emmitt was ranked # 4 on the Cowboys' board, and they took him because he fell to (what # 17)? I do know that after the draft it was stated by someone in the organization the name of the LB they wanted but he was taken a lot earlier.

I'm not only getting old but my memory has slowed down some also. lol

James Francis from Baylor. He went to the Bengals at 12. Dallas moved up from 21 to 17 to take Emmitt.

By the way, Emmitt was the 2nd of 6 RBs taken in the 1st round that year. He gained more yards than all of them put together.

And the one taken in front of him(Blair Thomas) ended up on the Cowboys briefly in 1994 when Emmitt pulled his hamstring late in the season.

James Francis was the LB's name and I believe the Bengals drafted him. Also the RB from Penn St. was on our list ahead of Emmit, The Jets drafted him Blair Thomas was his name.

I think the best approach is to take "BPA at a position of need."

You have to be flexible. If the BPA is just head and shoulders above everyone else you take him even if it isn't a position of need. If it is a close choice between a few players, then you take the BPA that fills a need.

exactly and the rest is history

I somewhat agree with this but only for rounds 1-3. Your first and second picks should always be guys that can contribute right away because those are the guys you want to get on the field right away. The only problem is that sometimes the players you target get picked up before you pick which sorta leaves you to your second, third, fourth options. That is when BPA ususally comes to play and you pick those guys and find a spot for them.

What I do like about the Garrett era is that outside of the those first three rounds everyone else has to earn their spot which is the way it should be. Next year it will get interesting with Holland, Nagy, Arkin, Costa, Kowalski, Kosier, and whatever draftees or FAs that Dallas picks up.

DB, DL, OL should be needs in the next draft.

I agree. Take the BPA within a certain range of need. Don't reach for need ... Shante Carver, Ebenezer Ekuban, David LaFleur, et al.

We also need to stop with the project players.

As you can see by the contributions of this year's draft class, it's important to get "players". Tyron Smith and Demarco Murray are BIG reasons why we're 7-4 and not 5-6.

and ive just about got my cowboys war room fixed up, working on draft section now, and im going to hehe be real sneaky and hide some of my draft stuff for coming draft behind my blackboard chalk board that i use to diagram plays etc... just wait til you guys and ladies see my new war room, its going to be awesome and thats not even my bedroom with cowboys stuff either

Blair Thomas would have been a very good rb if he had had the OL the Cowboys had in front of him.

Wade Phillips absolutely destroyed this team in '09 with that "Special Teams" draft. I honestly believe that draft set us back.

it did, but heh, thats what wade wanted in the draft and he got his wish, backfired on him though

Didn't Jimmy also try and make a move for Lamar Lathon from Houston after failing to get James Francis?

I remember Jimmy desperately wanting a defensive player in that first round but when he struck out twice in trade up offers he looked up and realized the 3rd rated player on our board was still sitting there and that's when he was finally able to make the deal for the trade to 17.

Some folks might not actually remember that Blair Thomas did actually suit up for the Cowboys briefly.

That seems to sound about right. Lathon was actually a good linebacker in his day.

He had exactly the same OL that Emmitt ran behind. He did squat.
