The DE scenario

His draft profile mentioned it and I was watching his highlights and Michigan used him that way effectively. We've missed that since Irving retired. Maybe Jeremiah had some information with his mock draft.

I guess I'm just missing it on him. I've watched his tape and just not very impressed. Maybe it's the Michigan and Taco deal - but for whatever reason, I can't get pumped about picking him in the 1st.

Outside of QB, the most important/impact position is edge rusher.

DLaw is old, declining, and trending in the wrong direction rapidly.
Gregory, & Armstrong are free agents after the 21' season -- nothing special with those guys.
Anae, Basham, etc., -- just guys, insignificant -- mainly roster fillers.
That's it.

The idea that the Cowboys are set at edge rushers is misplaced.
Maximizing external stress to the pocket, and collapsing the QB-comfort zone is the only to slow the likes of Brady, Rodgers, Mahomes, etc., -- spending the #10 pick on freakin' CB ain't going to do diddly squat when the QB's are not pressured.

Gil Brandt -- Jaelan Phillips, pass-rusher, University of Miami -- "He’s the guy everybody will be talking about two years from now...he has the biggest upside in the draft. You hit on him, you’ve hit a home run with the bases loaded.”

Rousseau isn't even the best DE from Miami. Phillips is the best DE in this class. But 10 might be too rich for him. If we traded down into the late teens or early 20s, picked up another 2nd or 3rd round pick, I would be fine with Phillips there.

Taking Paye at 10 is nauseating.
I didn’t include Phillips because of his injuries but I think the is the best DL pass rusher

I rather target one of the other edge rushers in rounds 3-5.

Jordan Smith
Janarius Robinson
William Bradley- King
Patrick Jones

i like kwity paye better than others.
but our history of swings n misses with michigan de's make me nervous.
but i like the player.
i still think georgia's azeez ojularai is the best de in the draft...but i think paye will go off the board first.
i would love to get carlos basham or payton turner in the 2nd...but my gut tells me they will go before 44.
3rd or 4th rd might be our spot for a DE.
notre dame's daelin hayes or pitt's patrick jones would be great.
i also like iowa's chauncey golston and nwestern's ernest brown.

I was team Rousseau, but his workouts just don't say 1st round pick at all.

Jaelen Phillips has DeMarcus Ware's game and Sean Lee's injury history. Super high-variance pick.

Great analogy. Many say he is the best pass rusher out there, but his injury history is hard to ignore. When you "retire" in college because of concussions, it is kind of a scary thought to be drafting him.

I’m starting to like DE and it would be nice to have the baddest pass rusher in the draft. Whose the guy? Payne, Rousseau?

Or at least keep it in the front 7 is Parsons or Collins out of the question?
No DE is worthy of pick 10

If I have this right, the Cowboys have Gregory, Lawrence, Armstrong, Basham, Ron'Dell Carter, Ladarius Hamilton, Breeland Speaks and Anae at DE right now. Plus, the can use Urban and Watkins on the end in some situations. I see the need for depth, but with Gregory and Lawrence starting, Basham, Armstrong and Anae rotating in, I see a need to improve in the rotation, but not an urgent need for a starter. I would not spend a first round pick this year on DE, not when we have the DTs we have. To solve the pass rush we need a DT who pushes the pocket and forces the QB out of the pocket where Gregory and Lawrence can make a play.

Looking at the roster, the biggest needs are clearly CB, DT, LB and OL. DE is a secondary need. And this isn't a good draft for DEs.

I guess I must have missed the time when Randy Gregory earned a starting spot in the NFL...

Yeah, Paye is a lot better than getting credit on here for. Call it a bad Taco hangover, if you wish... but he’s nothing like Taco except for his college uniform. He’s a physical, twitchy guy that plays hard on every down and is versatile enough to help all along the line. Taco had length, a dumb name, and that’s it. I’ve seen Paye comped to a bigger Brandon Graham, and I think it is a good comparison. He’s going to be good at worst IMO.

Is he my favorite pick in the first? No, he isn’t. But he is a good player with more upside than many other prospects.

Roussaue, (however you spell it) on the other hand, just screams to stay away from that mess. I don’t like him much as a prospect and I think there’s a good chance he’ll bust. Just my opinion.

I really like both Ojulari and Phillips but there are some risks there... especially with Phillips. However, I think he’s probably the best edge rusher right now. Ojulari is just a fantastic athlete who could be really good.

I like both of them.

Not sure I trust Phillips. Seemingly great player for sure but concussion history and commitment to football are big red flags. I sure as hell wouldn’t risk a top 20 pick on him.

I compared him to Graham too. Paye is very strong for a DE. His 36 reps of 225 are the most of all the DEs by far. He is benching up there with the big strong DTs. I could see him being very disruptive inside or outside. He is not my pick at #10 either but they could do worse in the first round. He seems like the type of guy the Cowboys love to draft. He has that versatility the seem to cherish.
