Ladies, gentlemen, Cowboys nation -

Up to this point the Cowboys have been walking in the shallow end of their schedule. No way around it, of the teams they have beaten, their is not one single contender that will be in this year's playoffs...I believe most of us can agree on that. If you will kindly consult your schedule and then check any power rankings currently available at various NFL oriented website's (blogging the boys compiles a collection, if I'm not mistaken) you will see our beloved team is now entering what can only be described as the deep end...very deep and the waters are choppy. Sink or swim time, boy's.

If they sink, it truly could be for a myriad of reasons which in all likelihood will be a little bit of all the possible reasons people will point out in the aftermath. But if they swim, my prediction of how that unfolds follows:

Lawrence must pick up where he left off last season. I don't expect him to do so from the word go, but we will see him again at some point this season...sooner than too late, hopefully.

Romo returns to the game (and to his 2014 form) or Dak keep's the job (or the unmentionable happens) and continues his current rate of progession...which by the end, would be pretty darn good.

The forgotten son, Randall "if I were white, I would be wearing sandals" Gregory gets both his mind and his body right to be ready with fresh legs to provide a legitimate pass rush from opposite Lawrence. At the very least, a good rotational piece; particularly on passing downs.

The offensive line is not perpetually-hampered by injuries. This unit is the offenses secret sauce, except it is clearly not a secret to the football-watching world. Everything the Cowboys want to do (offense, defense and special teams) starts with the offensive line. Wins and losses are decided by their collective execution, as we have seen in our wins and losses to date. The offensive line got their *** kicked by the Giants. Hindsight suggest Tyron was clearly nursing an injury while attempting to gut his way through against a very steep challenge. He had a bad day. Free and Collins struggled, as well.

Zeke continues to his current rate of progession, aided by the ever-steady Alfred as the reliever. I suspect the Cowboys are attempting to keep things simple for Dak, while simultaneously keeping much of their playbook untapped for the opposition to see on tape. Obviously, this could provide one heck of an advantage down the stretch as they give Zeke and company an increased role in the passing game.

With the advent of well-playing Lawrence and Gregory, the rotation at DT becomes epic, as they are now rotating everyone who has been the starting DL for the most part to date. And they've at least finished game's.

Dez/Scandrick returns...healthy...and have nothing lingering.

Jaylon's nerve fires would be a nice-to-have not necessarily a have-to-have.

If the Cowboys can team the above with some luck on the health front, they will definitely be a team to beat.

What say you?

That's a lot of "ifs"-- everything comes down to how far the offense can take us. The D will be average even if DLaw returns to form. If we can continue to pound the rock and win the turnover battle every week, then we will be competitive in every game this year.

We could be getting healthy at just the right time of the season-- Dez, Romo, Hanna, DLaw, Scandrick etc can really help us make a strong push down the line. The NFCE is up for grabs, and who knows what can happen in the playoffs. The formula from 2014 is working for us right now-- and it should only get better the healthier we get.

Burfict, Dunlap, Atkins (and to a lesser extent Peko). We must stop these four studs from imposing their will. Burfict feasts on the destruction that the Bengals DL creates (namely Atkins, and to a lesser extent Peko), as well as creating his own destruction in the open field. He plays with a chip on his shoulder and our Oline needs to punk his *** and get him in check early.

Zeke cannot run straight at Burfict, like he seems inclined to do at times (running like a monster straight at defenders), but last game, Zeke was showing amazing one cut in the fray, and he's learning to play with his head instead of his heart. With Dez most likely out, he needs to be implemented in the passing game.

Dak needs to be Dak, stay cool and calm, and continue to make his reads and not force the ball. I'd like Linehan to continue to give him more PA, feeding off Zeke's destruction, but it's harder to pull off out of shotgun (which is another plus for Romo, an "under center" QB), but it's still been done many times thus far with Sir Dak and is intregal to his game. Linehan has been scheming his ever loving *** off for Dak, and we should expect to see many bootlegs and the aforementioned PA. Jones is a nice CB, but he isn't Sherman or Peterson, so even Butler should be able to make some plays.

Lots of small slants and posts to Cole and the beautiful seam that Witten executes game after game.

The defense must continue its bend-don't-break D that Marinelli is squezzing out of his unit like a juicer at a Jamba Juice. God willing Tank shows up and maybe we get a statement game from Lee (read: forced turnover).

Collins, in his third game may flash (he really hasn't flashed yet), and boy do we need him to. Is Nacho in, and if so, will he be a factor? TCraw needs to be a factor.

Mo needs to be Mo, and if that means single coverage on Green (I've seen conjecture both ways -- Mo, or Carr and a cover safety/double coverage) or shutting down their WR2 (no LaFell, god willing), he just needs to keep playing amazing ball.

We have a shot -- Dalton is, without a doubt, a bus driver. He is not a QB who can carry a team, and as @Idgit said, even at this point I'm taking Dak over the ginger.

So booyah, Cowboys! Let's go, Boys! And continue to prove everyone wrong!!!

Close game. We need to win STs and TO Diff then do our thing.
You guys realize I'm talking about playoff's and beyond though, right? I know it's way too soon. I'm just spit-balling what will have to happen to get there and beyond.

As for the Bengals, this may be by far the Cowboys biggest challenge. Very talented front 7. Good QB. Good to great ol. Nice rb duo. Elite receiver. Tall order for the Cowboys to keep both sides of the ball in check.

But, by the end of the year, the Cowboys could be a completely different team that rolls over teams like this.

@jday, I see your OP was more of a meta-assessment and I went all CIN-DAL. Apologies brother. Also, what happened to the thread you made earlier about growing up in a Cowboy Family?

Beautiful OP, man, you have a way with words. Thanks for keeping this board active with well thought-out posts, brother. Apologies, again, for rushing through it on first reading and jumping the gun. :)

I was gonna go there, with the "we don't have the defense to contend against the elite teams" spiel, but your meme encapsulates it much, much better :)

Such a classic press conference lol!

I love the optimism, man, but I think our D will be the death

Just for clarification, I wasn't being optimistic in the op...but to be fair, I am optimistic. ;)

you got in the reply before the edit!! Grrr :)

There is a lot of optimism shrouded in your OP, J :) Nothing wrong with that, either. Not when we're 3-1. **** it!

IMO, there's never been a bigger need for Bailey to be "Bailey" than this game. This will be a game won by ST and I fully believe that we are one of the best in that area. This will be a game won by the team who can maximize their chances outside of the opponent's redzone. I feel a FG spamming game coming up.

One of the most beautiful posts I've ever read on this board. I really mean that, J.

Reality should pin it for a day or two.
Wow. That is high praise. Thanks, bro.

Though, I can't agree that it's my personal best... but very glad you liked it.
