Ladies, gentlemen, Cowboys nation -
Up to this point the Cowboys have been walking in the shallow end of their schedule. No way around it, of the teams they have beaten, their is not one single contender that will be in this year's playoffs...I believe most of us can agree on that. If you will kindly consult your schedule and then check any power rankings currently available at various NFL oriented website's (blogging the boys compiles a collection, if I'm not mistaken) you will see our beloved team is now entering what can only be described as the deep end...very deep and the waters are choppy. Sink or swim time, boy's.
If they sink, it truly could be for a myriad of reasons which in all likelihood will be a little bit of all the possible reasons people will point out in the aftermath. But if they swim, my prediction of how that unfolds follows:
Lawrence must pick up where he left off last season. I don't expect him to do so from the word go, but we will see him again at some point this season...sooner than too late, hopefully.
Romo returns to the game (and to his 2014 form) or Dak keep's the job (or the unmentionable happens) and continues his current rate of progession...which by the end, would be pretty darn good.
The forgotten son, Randall "if I were white, I would be wearing sandals" Gregory gets both his mind and his body right to be ready with fresh legs to provide a legitimate pass rush from opposite Lawrence. At the very least, a good rotational piece; particularly on passing downs.
The offensive line is not perpetually-hampered by injuries. This unit is the offenses secret sauce, except it is clearly not a secret to the football-watching world. Everything the Cowboys want to do (offense, defense and special teams) starts with the offensive line. Wins and losses are decided by their collective execution, as we have seen in our wins and losses to date. The offensive line got their *** kicked by the Giants. Hindsight suggest Tyron was clearly nursing an injury while attempting to gut his way through against a very steep challenge. He had a bad day. Free and Collins struggled, as well.
Zeke continues to his current rate of progession, aided by the ever-steady Alfred as the reliever. I suspect the Cowboys are attempting to keep things simple for Dak, while simultaneously keeping much of their playbook untapped for the opposition to see on tape. Obviously, this could provide one heck of an advantage down the stretch as they give Zeke and company an increased role in the passing game.
With the advent of well-playing Lawrence and Gregory, the rotation at DT becomes epic, as they are now rotating everyone who has been the starting DL for the most part to date. And they've at least finished game's.
Dez/Scandrick returns...healthy...and have nothing lingering.
Jaylon's nerve fires would be a nice-to-have not necessarily a have-to-have.
If the Cowboys can team the above with some luck on the health front, they will definitely be a team to beat.
What say you?
