The defense has been playing well

I am seeing a litany of posts with a continued dismissal of the defense. A whole lot of quips, digs and snark.

Thing is you look at our opponents offensive output against the first team the last three weeks and it's been 3 points.

Against SD the starters forced a fumble on the first series and that is all they went. Rivers was throwing on Lindsey, Mitchell, Hitchens, and Dixon scoring TDs.

Against Baltimore, Flacco managed a FG and a 3 and out.

Against Miami we turned them over and forced them to punt.

The team as a whole is creating lots of turnovers and TFL if not sacks.

I have no illusions that a good QB won't carve them up or that they are not limited in multiple areas but this very young defense is improving and to this point has done rather well.

What-no replies yet? Must be a "sky is NOT falling post".

I thought we couldn't judge the 1st team defense because everyone is injured.

I don't think like that. At least I don't think of football like that.

I think the argument was supposed to be that you cannot judge them yet if they're bad because they are not healthy yet.

That argument's premise is false. They have played well.

In fairness, unless you are the Seattle Seahawks, a good quarterback is probably going to carve you up. And with the "rule emphasis" this season, it is highly possible Seattle won't be as dominant.

They also aren't being schemed against.

Sure and they haven't schemed either. That is besides the point.

The starters only giving up only a FG and turning the ball over a lot is quality play. You have a lot of young guys playing better game by game too.

From reading the first page you would think our starters were getting rolled. It is simply not the case.

The defense is going to be bad vs the run... I just accept that.

But if they can minimize the damage vs the pass they could be a shade less than "bad".

The fact is bad defense vs the run isn't nearly as deadly as being bad vs the pass.

I think the DL has been bad against both the run and pass
...... the LBs have not had a chance against the run because of the above and have been okay against the pass
......the DBs have been good in coverage and mixed bag against the run

Hopefully the DL gets some starters back soon and they can fix the most glaring problems.

I guess it all depends on what your expectations are for the season. If the goal is to simply find a few serviceable players among the miscellaneous defensive players available then I think they are on track.

If you go back and look at last years preseason, the starters on defense didn't surrender a touchdown either. Week 1 came and went and even though we won we surrendered 31 pts.

Be careful looking at the box score and focus on the the play of the entire unit overall.

The turnovers are encouraging, but the DT play isn't.

The LBs are all over the place despite Durant having an excellent camp.

Still alot of question marks everywhere. Someone mentioned it before but no one is game planning and we are getting gashed on the run. Once an opposing OC sees a weakness they keep attacking it until you can show that you can stop it effectively.

What the Cowboys did last season, at this point, was to start actual game planning for the first week's game. That being San Francisco.

Jerry stated that the 1's on offense may start a series or two against Denver on Thusday, to take some continuity of success into the first game.

I don't have a lot of confidence in the defense, but I haven't had confidence in them for a while and the team didn't do anything that would lead anyone to believe that the unit will be improved.

I think they'll need more turnovers than last year, but I'm not sure it's gonna happen.

OK, we'll just ignore the fact that teams have been running the ball down our throats on the 1st and 2nd teams. That the only reasons that scores have not been out of control is because the turnovers and those are great, but who knows if we are going to get them during the regular season.

Unfortunately, in preseason you can't go by the scores, what matters are individual match-ups and when you see defensive lines three yards down the field at the start of the play you can't tell me that does not worry you. This defense appears to lack physicality, but I think that there are some athletic lineman, I just don't know what their ceilings are.

I guess you are watching a different game. The Dolphins, who in their first 2 games were averaging under 2ypc, which is almost impossible to do, gashed us all night. That is the worst thing to have happen to a defense is get gashed in the running game. It wears you down quicker and is more demoralizing. Most teams in this league can move the ball in the air with all the rules. Especially between the 20s. But if you can't stop the run at all, you are in trouble. And with this front 7, I don't see any pass rushers or run stoppers.

One other thing the people defending this defense line remind of the same people defending the the offensive line from a couple of years ago.

The defensive line even has its own Phil Costa in Nick Hayden.

We all were worried about the DL and justifiably so but I think the LBs are worse as a group than our Dline. They either can't shed a block or ones who can keep hitting the wrong gap against the run or over pursuit. And none of them has done well against the pass.
