The Defense..To blame or not to blame

How many of those were because of a great play on the ball? I only remember two, seems the rest were a result of a lucky bounce.

Are you referring to our pathetic 7 picks or the Giants/Skins 21?

Our pathetic 7

I can't disagree.

But is not just this year.

Just about every year we’re near or at the bottom when it comes to generation turnovers (interceptions and fumble recoveries).

But what makes it even more infuriating this year is we supposedly have two top notch corners.

Guess it's all about that pass rush. Doesn't help that our safety play has been non-existent 99% of the year.

Yep. Washington showed as much tonight. Rattle the QB and the interceptions tend to pour in.

A pass rush that featured 2 double digit sackers.

Its not only pass rush, although it is a convenient excuse.

Well what the hell is it then? This has been a problem for years.

Ok, I know I'm sounding like a broken record here but last time we were actually good in INTs, our safeties lead the way, in 06 Roy Williams had 5 while in 07 Hamlin had 5. In 2010, even Sensy had 5 which helped our totals, but since he has been non-existent.

Now we don't get anything out of them. Our CBs can get them, but they have no support whatsoever and the passing windows are huge for the opposing QB.

I agree.

In 2008 we got 59 sacks (third highest total in a 16 game season) but only generated 8 interceptions (and that was on a team that started the season with 9 former no. 1 draft picks)

Two years later Pasqualoni’s defense generated 20 turnovers in eight games with Alan Ball as one of its starting safeties.

In general just don’t think we know how to use what players we have to best effect.

No blame.

They gave the ball to Romo with 3 minutes so he could play hero.

The gave up 274 yards rushing and no blame?

WOW.:laugh1:

Better safety play would help but I don’t think that’s the only answer.

1. Having a good defensive game plan for the opponent.

2. Putting the players in the best position to succeed (not asking them to do things they’re not good at or doesn’t play to their strengths).

3. Build early leads thus forcing teams to pass more (it’s hard to generate interceptions when the opposition has the lead and can run for over 200 yards although with that being said they should be able to force and recover the odd fumble).

Yeah I agree that its not the only thing, but it would definitely help. Its a team effort, both pass rush and back end support are needed. The pass rush drop off from our 2 top pass rushers is very significant, in 08 like you mentioned we got an insane 7.5 sacks from a NT and 8 from Bradie freakin James.

TRat being hurt has contributed, along with Ware not going insane in sacks for the first time. If Spencer is resigned, then we will probably have to attack it from the DL, although it is harder to find pass rushers from that position, not like there are any JJ Watt's in this draft.

With so many needs now, its hard to question anything the FO does at this point cause we need everything.....which makes this offseason even scarier.

Everything would help now. :)

Personally I hope they go OL and DL in the first two round unless a can’t miss prospect falls to us at 18 (which is unlikely).

The best value at our draft position is likely to be an interior DL or OL both of which we could use thus getting BPA at a position(s) of need.

Yeah I'm wide open as far as position right now for the draft (BPA with some need based common sense), sure there are some that might give us more bang for the buck but overall a case could be made for alot of positions.

We need a pass rusher, and that almost has to be taken at 18. A premium position (pass rusher) would make alot larger impact on this team overall then some non-premium position.

However the best pass rushers will be long gone by the 18 pick, so unless we're going for a Claiborne type trade up the the best players on the board at 18 at our main positions of need will be the interior linemen(OL and DL).

I do not blame the defense considering the injuries but I am not completely sold on Rob Ryan. I thought his hallmark was designing creative blitz packages and pressuring the QB like his father and brother. I really thought he was just holding back because of the secondary last year hence our upgrading the CB position. I have been amazed that we rarely blitz and when we do it is not "creative" at all and is easily picked up. Personally, I would have no problem hiring a new DC who knows how to pressure the QB. Give me a good 4 - 3 DC any day. I am tired of the 3 - 4 without blitzes.

Well I count a DL with pass rushing skills as a pass rusher. Of course, this is before the combine and such so who knows who will fit that bill. If there is a pass rusher from the 5 spot, I would definitely move up to get him (there is one on my mind but its too early to start naming names).

We need some impact on this team.

If anyone is blaming the defense for last nights loss, they are out of their damn minds.

really? Giving up 300 yards rushing is not a problem? That is the stuff that happens on Saturdays....teams rushing for 300 yards! Oops....don't look now, but that was an offense that they run on Saturdays. We got beat by a college team and a college offense. And yet the defense is NOT to blame? I don't care about how beat up Ware was....even healthy it would not have mattered. He looked like a pop warner player last night. He looked like he was playing blindfolded. That has NOTHING to do with his arm!

No, the defense isn't to blame. Over half the starters out, dealt with TWO Romo interceptions and gave the offense the ball with 3 minutes left and an opportunity to tie with a field goal or to win the game with a touchdown. There's not much else you can do. I'd love to see these mythical defenses that are holding opposing teams to under 14 points the whole game, especially with most of their starters out.

Why didn't the offense, which had nearly all of it's starters not score more than TEN points until the fourth quarter? Why hasn't the offense not scored more than ten points in the first half in a single game this whole season?
