Jaylon Smith, Vander Esch, Cheeto, Lewis, Gregory, etc are all busted draft picks. Not to mention Byron Jones who we let walk who was drafted at Safety. Most of the draft picks on defense haven't panned out. Its no wonder our defense is bad.

Taco is a big one as well. Yes we've made some efforts. We've just made the wrong selections and paid the wrong people.

are you saying Will McClay is not the genius many on CZ tell us he is?

say it ain’t so

Replacing Byron Jones with Trevor Diggs does not make this defense go from average to bad. Current Coaches have a bit to answer for as well.

Great, depressing point by OP. All you need to know about this FO is that they paid Jaylon Smith and let Byron Jones walk. Not saying Jones was perfect, but at least he did something. It’s worth money to pay Smith to leave,

Two years ago yall were singing Jaylon and LVE's praises. They were perhaps the best tandem in the league. Injuries has been LVE's problem. I don't know what has happened with Jaylon. 2018 Jaylon was a baller.

The best teams are built through the draft.

Look at SF. They were terrible after Harbaugh left but bounced back quickly when John Lynch became GM.

Dallas has fumbled so many defensive draft picks the last 10 years. That, in of itself, is a major reason Dallas is stuck in a continuous cycle of mediocrity.

It’s all about the offense baby.

Just ask the Jones’s.

Their biggest issue is i dont think they know the defense very well....our draft picks are just over thinking too much

anytime you see people pointing on defense and people moving around thats a sign the defense is confused

however this defense doesnt get enough credit for being good against the run.....but all that means nothing when guys are running free on passing downs

LOL, I thought I read that here.

I think it's more of a coaching issue, not setting up players to succeed.

The talent is there. They need to be coached up. When players leave Dallas they tend to play many more years in the league.

Example, if Belichek were the defensive coordinator for this defense, right now, it would be visibly better.

Byron Jones was on the team 5 years.

Once he is a free agent that signed a 17M per year contract, he is the same as any other team's free agent.
- If the Cowboys signed a similar CB for 17M and let Byron Jones move on, it would not be relevant that Jones was drafted by the Cowboys.
- Even when they didn't sign another CB for 17M, the point is that they could sign a really good free agent for 17M per.
- The fact that they drafted Jones would not have mattered if they did re-sign him. It would cost the Cowboys the same that it's costing the Dolphins.

they were exposed is what happened. A year of film showed them what they needed to see.

There are limits to what Belichick could have done if he was in the 1st year with a new team when there was no preseason and basically no real off-season.
- Add in that the projected top DT was lost for the season and 2 of the top 3 CBs are on IR.
- The projected #1 DE has been playing though injury and only played about half the number of snaps that he normally plays.

The only thing Belichick could have done is to have somehow prevented the mistakes on offense and special teams.

I think something physical with Jaylon as well. Watch him run. Uneven gait. Watch the left leg. See if he can ever anchor and drive off of it.
