The Dallas Cowboys team of the 90's won their very first playoff game. Who was the quarterback?

It's the 1993 NFC championship game and the Cowboys lead 28 to 7. All seems to be going well until troy Aikman suffers a game ending conscussion on the Cowboy's first possession in the 3rd quarter. the 49ers then take the ball down the field and score a TD. With the score 28-14 and the 49ers gaining momentum, the Cowboys must use their backup QB. Who was the backup and how did he perform in the game?
\
Why do teams have more than one quarterback?

How many starting QB's in the NFL are backed up by former Pro Bowlers?

The Dallas Cowboys made an historically unprescedented commitment to Tony Romo. He was on the team a full three years without a single regular season snap as a quarterback. He threw his very first pass in the 5th game of his 4th season.....in the era of salary caps and maximizing value.

Tony Romo owes his career and good fortune to the patience and expertise of the Dallas Cowboys coaching staff and management team. He could demonstrate his appreciation, loyalty and respect to the orgaization, the team, and it's fans by renegotiating his contract and agreeing to become the Cowboys veteran backup.

The decision would extend his career. More importantly, there is a very high probability that a day would come, perhaps during the playoffs, where he would be required to replace Dak Presott at a time where the team could ill afford the typically reduced skill level of an NFL backup.

In the spirit of Tim Duncan, Champion and future Hall of Famer, such a selfless decision by Tony Romo could give an improbable but exciting career an even more improbable, more exciting end.

Rather than mortgage the future for the potential of present success, as the Vikings did, the Cowboys could invoke the magic a past hero.

LOL. Are you old enough to recall the movie E.T. and the fact that many people described E.T. as being so ugly, he was actually cute?

That describes your post perfectly.

Truly funny. Room would never go for that, nor should he.

The 1972 Miami Dolphins are considered the best team in history, unsefeated regular and postseason, #1 offense, #1 defense.

How could this happen when their #1 quarterback, Bob Greise was injured in game #5 and missed 9 games?

Their backup was 38 year old Earl.Morral, a former 2nd overall pick.

There have been so many instances where a starter goes down and an older quarterback must step back in, using his experience and guile to replace the skill and athleticiam he no longer possessed.

The Resskins had a great season in 87, but all seemed lost when their Jay Schraeder was lost for the playoffs when injuredb in game #15. It was a.good thing they had former #1 pick, 32 year old Doug Williams. He started only a.couple games nut ny the end.of the season, he was Super Bowl MVP.

Just because Romo wouldnt start it doesnt mean he couldnt contribute in a very big way.

Tony Romo will and should do it. If he sees the potential for the season to end in a Super Bowl he could get his ring to end a career.

It's nice to remember old days in the NFL before the salary cap isn't it. Those days are long gone
and starting QB's in today's NFL are premium commodities. If the Cowboy's choose, it will be to
keep Romo as their QB 1 or cut him next year as a June 1st release. You really can't get a trade
for a 36 year old QB who's been hurt a lot. No team is going to pick up next year's contract for a then
37 year old player. If the Cowboy's release him, some team will come at Tony trying to work a short
term deal. This isn't Madden and no team is going to give picks for Tony. Oh, players just won't take
a big reduction or discount to stay on current team as a backup. Not if they can get more as a FA.

Uhh...they had already won the Super Bowl the season before this, so this wouldn't have been their "very first playoff" win.

Was it Hostettler that took over for Simms in one of their SB's. Not sure of the age differences though.

It's anyone's guess if Romo would consider being a backup after so many years as the starter. It's also highly questionable, not to mention doubtful, whether or not he'd be willing to re-do his current contract to take a greatly lesser amount and allow Jerry to look much better in the process. These are things that will be decided only by those involved. Conjecture by this forum won't in any way influence the parties who will make that decision. Only time and the parties involved will tell that tale in the end. In the meantime, it's merely something to talk about.

Romo also got some of his success by having a nice young invigorated Dez Bryant catching his passes. Dez could be slowing down now and that previous success Romo had may not come as readily as it had in the past.

Romo should agree to new contract with minimum pay or be cut. His contract is going to be absolutely crippling for this franchise over the next few years and he isn't even going to be playing.

Landry rotated Morton and Staubach.
....And it failed miserably. After losing to a George Allen coached Commanders, a terrible Saints team led by rookie Archie Manning, and a Bear team with a running quarterback, the Cowboys were 4-3.

Tom Landry then gave the starting job to Roger Staubach and the Cowboys went undefeated the rest of the season, including their first ever Super Bowl.

So true, good memory on the details of the season!

Old NFL proverb:

Even a beloved Joe Montana left for Kansas City.

Of course, Montana left via a trade. Romo's exit could happen that way or he could leave after being cut. Who knows? Regardless, the notion that emotional attachment would motivate him to remain with a franchise, followed by a significant portion of fans who dislike or hate him as their quarterback, is an obscenely farfetched notion in my opinion. I think it's way more practical that Romo would consider options outside of Dallas in an era of the NFL where even universally recognized top tier quarterbacks are ridiculously overpaid on a routine basis.

Not that NFL quarterbacks should be singled out for morbid income disparity. Too many professional athletes throughout sports are in the same luxury liner boat.
