The Excitement of a New Quarterback

It's a downright physical thrill..the anticipation of watching a young quarterback develop before a fan's eyes.

Even the sting of last Monday night's humiliating loss can't shake the bloom off this rose - the sheer joy of observing an entire team reach deep into it resources to find an extra dose of energy, strength, experience, resolve..because man to man they know a young quarterback will need everyone doing his best to succeed.

What I expect to see in Carolina on Sunday evening is an offensive line commmitted to their new field general...stalwart in their desire to open holes to give him a running game, understanding that you can't expect a fledgling qb to throw indiscriminately. I also expect to see inspired pass protection, even if it's facing the likes of Julius Peppers. Flo and Company might get their backsides kicked, but if they do, we are going to know they 'care'.

Expect to see the backs, TEs, and receivers even more focused on solid blocking and of course, lending their professionalism and experience to easing the learning curve. Laying themselves out for passes, making extra special effort.

And I think the excitement will transition to the defense as well, as they try to win the time of possession battle via opponent drive crushing. They will come out super-psyched up, Bradie, Demarcus, Tnew, Fergy, AH, all of them, playing with fire and abandon.

I think the emotion will extend to the entire coaching staff, yes, even to that often sour looking old man on the sidelines who is undoubtedly playing the final quarterback youngster of his career.

Win or lose, it is going to be riveting, and spine tingling...not just watching this kid work, feel, and battle his way through new scenarios, but to see the rest of the team come together with the desire to make the path straighter for Tony R.

It's been one of my favorite NFL hobbies for decades now....checking out the 'atmosphere' surrounding a kid QB. The inspiration, the growth, the emotion, the mistakes, the successes, the heartbreak, the comebacks, the display of increased maturity and understanding week by week....

It's flat out nerve tingling.

And seeing it take place under Parcells just this one last time, well, for someone who enormously enjoyed watching Bill in 03 getting so much out of Quincy, this 'last hurrah' will be particularly poignant.

I've said it a hundred times already this week, but I'm looking forward to this game more than any game in years, probably including the playoff game in '03.

Disappointment looms ahead as the caracel circles back around again in search of that ever elusive franchise quarterback, like sand in the hour glass these are the days of our lives.

It is exciting to see a home-grown QB who looks like he has the ability and potential to be a quality starter. And I don't think there is any question that Romo has the ability anymore - even Bill has practically spelled that out.

Now comes everything else that goes along with it. I just think that Romo is going to surprise some folks.

I hope this mid season QB change works out better than the last one we made in 2002 (I don't consider the Henson start in 2004 a real change).

Then it cannot be worse than those nine starts Hutchless made.

It's not really that exciting when you have lived through the first starts of the likes of Reggie Collier, Steve Pelluer, Kevin Sweeney, Babe Laufenburg, Clint Stoerner, Chad Hutchinson and Ryan Leaf.

Heheheh, Pelluer wasn't as bad as the rest of those bums.

i think you're right LTN. the OL just got a huge shot of adrenaline because there is no doubt they would get dejected early out of human nature.... they know Drew was gonna get hit and even worse not protect the football as he stands there waiting and waiting not making throws. it's just human nature... you tend to lose your faith and will to struggle when you see no light at the end of the tunnel. the OL is a collective bunch of underachievers to boot and Romo can make them look less futile and more like real NFL players.

i do think the entire team is in sink or swim mode... they see the light and that is something they are ready for. Tuna realized there is enough waiting for this and waiting for that... it's put up or shut up and there is no reason to think this team can't respond with a couple of victories in the next 3.

You forgot Gary Hogeboom. I actually have a VHS tape of his first start in 1984 against the LA Rams, in LA. It was not good. I am concerned that Romo lacks arm strength. Seems to me one of those INTS was on a pass that just ran out of gas before making it to it's target.

There is a big part of me that would not mind seeing Brady Quinn in a Cowboy's uniform. Not that I think he's great, but he seems to have that "luck" that things will turn out right no matter what. Danny White lacked that "intangible". I hope Romo has enough of it to make up for any lack of arm strength he may have...

The funny thing is that he had one of the strongest arms of the Qb prospects that came out that year.
