The four weaknesses on our Oline

After watching tidbits on Sunday vs. the Eagles and rewatching the game on DVR. I have made a few tidbit comments on what is hurting out olineman's pass and run blocking. Remember these are my opinions from what I saw.

1. We cant handle the stunt/flip/twist crap. Adams does his job on stunts where the DE Howard stutters outside and shoots inside to sack Bledsoe. Same on the right side.
2. Backside blocking, Flo seemed to be the culprit as in half stepping blocking Howard who would make plays down the line of scrimmage. Same applies to our TE's and FB.
3. Line calls. Gurode is handling DT's pretty good, but some of his blitz pickup calls have been downright horrible. There was one running play where Trotter shot right through the A Gap and tackled JJ.
4. Second Level blocking. Other than Kosier, the rest of the guys arent getting to those LB's or even touching them half the time. IDK if it is the play design itself or their lack of stamina/speed/knowledge/angles.

These guys were playing very good against Washington and Tennessee, but have been exploited vs. Jacksonville and Philly.

Now I'm not suggesting we change things up, we just arent preparing enough. Teams from now on will be copying the Philly blueprint. The Giants might be one of the harder pass rushes we face.

Teams may try to copy Philly but getting the same results is a different story.

That seems to be the biggest issue. So far they've handled the blitz well sans the Philly game. In the other games they've had difficulties against the stunts, but they haven't been that bad. Still this is #1 problem.

2. Backside blocking, Flo seemed to be the culprit as in half stepping blocking Howard who would make plays down the line of scrimmage. Same applies to our TE's and FB.

Flo has had problems with that in the past as well. Although I don't really recall this being a huge issue.

3. Line calls. Gurode is handling DT's pretty good, but some of his blitz pickup calls have been downright horrible. There was one running play where Trotter shot right through the A Gap and tackled JJ.

Most of the problems seemed to stem from Flozell not making the obvious adjustment and picking the inside guy. Not sure why he doesn't. I haven't gotten to the second half yet, but Kosier had a few issues with this as well. In the previous 3 games it wasn't much of an issue and from the sounds of it, Parcells is blaming Flozell, not Gurode.

4. Second Level blocking. Other than Kosier, the rest of the guys arent getting to those LB's or even touching them half the time. IDK if it is the play design itself or their lack of stamina/speed/knowledge/angles.

Depends what second level blocking you are talking about. If you want an O-Lineman to block a D-Linemen then go to a LB or if you want an O-Lineman to go straight to a linebacker. The former is something that fans always want, but it's pretty difficult for any O-Lineman to do on a consistent basis.

The run blocking has been good so far, and I don't see this as much of an issue.

I agree with Rich. Run Blocking was VERY GOOD against Philly and most of the other teams. The OLine was opening holes for Julius throughout the game. The only time we had a HORRIBLE running play was on a whiffed block by, whoelse but, Flozell Adams.

Heck.. just look at the fact that Julius is the leading rusher in yards per game for proof that we can run block WELL.

The main problem I noticed was that Flozell was just not adjusting to the blitz. If I remember correctly, nearly ALL of the sacks/pressures they had from the blitz came from Flozell's side. The remainder of the sacks came from either a stunt or 1 guy just getting beat on his individual matchup (which wasn't often).

Flozell just had a BAD BAD game.

Its not that our OLine can't get it done PHYSICALLY... its just mental errors that really killed us against Philly. IMHO

That means we need someone in the near future, this year or next year to come in and either take Flo's spot or be as dependable as Columbo has been this year.

I hate to seem like a Gurode jock-sniffer, coming to his defense everytime I see him called out - but whiffing on a blitz when we don't know what the line call was or should have been can't be analyzed. We have no idea if he is making the calls correctly or not. That will be something we won't ever know unless Parcells tells us.

That being said, see another thread I created earlier. We were snapping the ball right when they showed blitz - Bledsoe gave the line NO CHANCE to adjust. You are supposed to slow the count and allow your line to readjust it's reads.

This is what I expected the first post to say.
