1. Romo plays very well, giving the Cowboys a lead that ought to be the winning margin.
2. The defense plays very poorly, erasing much or all the Cowboys' lead;
3. Having played very well up to this point, Romo will finally throw an interception or commit some other crucial error.
4. Cowboys lose.
After the game, some fans will put 100% of the blame on Romo, ignoring the failures of the defense.......or put 100% of the blame on the defense, ignoring Romo's mistakes.
This frustrates Romo fans because even though he played excellently for much of the game and really should have been the game-winning quarterback, and that much of the fault lies with the defense, they know deep down that Romo's mistakes made a huge difference in the outcome.
This also frustrates Romo critics because even though Romo's mistakes made a huge difference in the outcome, they also know deep down that it's unreasonable to blame a quarterback who has turned in an excellent performance for most of the game but is let down by a defense that simply fails time and time again to stop the opposing offense when it matters. (Or let down by an offensive line that fails to block well, etc.)
