I am sure in the land of rainbows and unicorns we would like to sign every available free agent because we had an extra 53 roster spots with no cap ramifications.
So here we set a couple of days into free agency and thee has been a flurry of activity in the free agent market and we have not signed any free agents other than our own.
We have lost a few players already to free agency. That makes the sting hurt just a little bit more. That can be disconcerting to a fan base.
On the other hand I think the approach has been a smart approach. I would not have spent the money on most of the guys who have signed on the players that I have seen the contract numbers so far.
We are not overspending in free agency. While the talent pool IS dwindling, so are the available free agency DOLLARS are also drying up. Right now it is a sellers market, but over time it becomes a buyers market.
I would be content to let the entire first wave of free agency pass us by (pre-draft) if the value isn't there. We have 10 draft picks coming up in this draft (maybe 11 if someone signs Irving). That's a lot of draft ammo. Plus you have the UDFA's who will also be a part of the new blood.
Also, keep in mind that some of the guys currently on a roster will be cut for draft picks (who are coming in on cheap labor). Much like Dez might be cut if we draft a talented young receiver.
If we play this right we will be competive this year and save our cap room and continue to build this team the right way. That way we will be in the hunt every year instead of worrying about windows. It's the smart move.
