The Future for Ogletree

Og had the best shuttle time at the combine (of WRs anyway last year...)

So hitch pattern, right? Full speed, come to a full stop, turn and catch it.

He showed this in preseason running these little little comeback patterns. He left the DB in the dust most times who couldn't come back in time to break up the pass.

Definitely excited about KO. He's going to need to run some other routes to keep defenses honest. He seems like an ideal slant or drag guy because of his quickness and speed. He ran a very good comeback in the preseason. Gotta get this guy deep also. This offense hasn't come close to reaching it's potential. Garrett has the weapons. So far he's doing a great job.

I think the emergence (what we've seen so far) of Ogletree combined with what we've seen from Austin could spell the end for Sam Hurd in Dallas. I thought Hurd really had a future here but he is basically our #5 WR right now Behind Miles, RW, Crayton and Ogletree.

The likelihood is that we keep giving him some some incremental roles this year and see if he blossoms even more next year in TC. Not sure he will be a HUGE imact guy game after game but who knows.

I have to admit. He has definitely sparked my interest after that explosive catch & shoot. Once might be an aberration... Do it again and then some have to start looking a little closer at what we might have in our back pockets. :)

he did it twice

Watching that second screen he caught Sunday, on 3rd and 14, made me realise that kid is way faster than I realised he was. I'm hoping he can find himself an couple catches each week to show what he can do.

Wasn't a slip screen - a slip screen is when the RB "slips" through the line. Ogletree ran a bubble screen. I really wanted him to score too. Would have been awesome.

Slip screen, bubble screen, flanker screen, the screen on my front door, screen pass.......call it what you want, whatever works.

If Hurd does well in special teams, he still might remain w/the 'Boys.

Why? All this guy has done is work hard and produce with limited opportunities. He is an excellent route runner with great hands, and a special teams ace. You don't just get rid of guys like that. No, he is not the most physically gifted, but he does what the Cowboys need him to do. Not sure why everyone thinks you HAVE to make a move with WR in the off-season. If we do nothing in the offseason we are still very solid at the position.

I see Hurd sticking until he becomes a Free agent... you cant pay guys like that bc they come out every year and some come out the yr b4 but are at UPS until they get the call! The Game show kid could be Hurds replacement... OTree is a different type WR, if Otree is going to take snaps it will not be Hurds it will be Craytons!

OTree has that spark, like Felix did last yr... he looks frail but he was busting out tackles Sunday night. If he can work the deep middle or the deep sides, ITS OVER... How do you cover all that ground?

Here's the receiving stats through midseason:

RecYds Player
44 391 Jason Witten
27 612 Miles Austin
22 365 Patrick Crayton
19 324 Roy E. Williams
14 123 Tashard Choice
09 090 Martellus Bennett
09 077 Marion Barber
06 115 Sam Hurd
04 056 Felix Jones
03 057 Kevin Ogletree
01 005 Deon Anderson
01 000 John Phillips

People want Bennett, Felix, and Ogletree to get more touches ... while also hoping that things start clicking with Roy Williams.

Meanwhile, Witten and Austin are very important and need their opportunities. Crayton, as the former #2 WR and now as a high quality slot #3, gets open too. And obviously Romo has to checkdown to the RBs from time to time.

There just aren't enough balls to go around.

(.... the thing about Bennett - even though he's been limited to 9 catches for 90 yards, he's making a major contribution as a blocking TE.)

Hurds to good of a receiver to be so far down on a depth chart.

Unless something happens hes leaving because could be a #3 or even a #2 for a lot of teams.

He will likely go to someone from the Bill Parcells tree of coaches and start.

I didn't say we HAD to make a move. I just don't know if he will be resigned because if I remember right he is a RFA at the end of the year.

I don't think Hurd will ever amount to more than a ST player now that there are 4 guys likely permanently ahead of him on the roster. He may choose to go elsewhere when given a chance - kind of like the Keith Davis situation.

Now that the slip screen worked for us for the first time it should be tougher to execute. But Id still try a pump and go off that.

Id also work on getting him the ball underneath on the run b/c hes dangerous(As is Marty  )

And Id like to see him on KO's

Good Point. They can sure use Olgetree on more plays.

Sam Hurd will get more reps. He just need to stay focus and just keep catching when the opportunity is thrown his way.

Trust me, it's coming.

Tony Romo is going to pump fake the screen to Kevin Ogletree and then look to throw a deep route to Patrick Crayton, who will have faked a run block from the slot and then released up field.

We've run that play in the past.

Sam Hurd is a tremendous coverage player on special teams and capable of multi-tackle games. But he just isn't getting many snaps on offense and Kevin Ogletree's emergence will only make it harder, IMO.

He's made some clutch grabs in limited work.

Hurd will be a restricted free agent for the next two seasons unless the CBA gets extended, so I don't see him going anywhere unless a trade occurs or we take a receiver plunge in the draftaroo.
