The Good
I believe we have the talent to completely dominate on defense yet we do not even come close. I lay this blame squarely on Mike Zimmer. As I said before I don't think he is a bad coach, (he had the #1 rated defense when coaching a 4-3) I just think he doesn't understand the 3-4. You wouldn't ask non-bilingual english speaker to teach spanish. Why would you have a 4-3 guy coach a 3-4 defense. It's not working. Parcells needs to take over the defense or at least bring someone in that knows how it's suppose to operate.
Offensively, the line just isn't good enough to take the Cowboys deep into the playoffs. It doesn't matter if you have Bledsoe or Romo. They just arn't that good. I suspect serious changes coming this offseason. Through drafting and free agency.
- The changing of the guard from Bledsoe to Romo. Bledsoe's experience can help the Cowboys more than Romo's. The problem is that our offensive line can't stop the blitz and blitzing Bledsoe is his thorn. Considering that, Romo becomes our best chance to win. So, even with Bledsoe's savy, our other shortcoming make it were Romo gives us the best chance to win on offense.
- With Romo in the game, it allows Witten to go into patterns more rather than staying in for max-protect. A good thing for the offense.
- With Romo in teams must play containment on the pocket instead of full blitzing. This not only allows Romo more time it stops all the blitzing that our offensive line cannot handle.
- The defensive lines inability to pressure the QB without relying on the blitz.
- The refs review of Eli's fumble and calling it a incomplete pass. While I know it sounds homer to say that, you could clearly see Ellis' hand on the ball while he was bringing it back. There was no way Eli was ever going to get any forward motion on the ball and should have been declared a fumble.
- Ref interference on the first Giants TD. This didn't happen to a linebacker in the middle of the field. It happen in the end zone on a deep pass to a safety. The ref saw the throw and knew where it was going. He had no busy being were he was and his mistake made a major impact on the game.
- Tyson Thompson's looked horrible during the return game. He didn't have any explosiveness he didnt break any tackles and he never even attempted to get going full speed. He was "deactivate bad" and even "waved bad" yesterday. There is enough other talent on this team that the Cowboys do not need Thompson.
- The offensive line's inability to pick up the blitz. This in my mind has everything to do with coaching. These guys just don't get it and it has to be preparation issues. They have obviously have been working on this alot due to all the problems yet it's not getting any better.
- Mike Zimmer has to go. Mike is a great 4-3 coach, but he doesn't seem to have a clue about a 3-4. You have one of the best cover cornors in the league and you consistently play him 7 yards off the receiver. When you are bringing the house, (heavy blitzing) you must disrupt the receiver to break timing routes that kill blitzing. Yet, you have TNew and you have him playing 7 yards off of the receiver during a blitz and Eli fires a timing pass to convert a 3rd down for a first down that Newman didn't have much of a chance at stopping because he was 7 yard off Plaxico. Good job Zimmer. Good job. Can't say enough about that blunder. I just don't understand how Henry plays tight all game and Newman plays 7 yards off???
- Pat Watkins inability to make plays on deep passes. This is very troubling. While he was in better position this time, he HAS to make that play. Add in the dropped interception with Marcus Coleman back, I suspect Watkins may lose his starting job.
