I used to be into the Grammys but not much anymore. Anyone watching?

I’ve been turned off by their recent trend of their Album of the Year picks. Every year, they tend to throw a nomination at an album that’s loved by critics and fans and impactful in the current times we live in, but then they always award the trophy to the safest pop or rock album available. Recently, it’s been Adele over Sturgill Simpson and Beyoncé, Taylor Swift over Kendrick Lamar, Daft Punk over Kendrick Lamar, Mumford and Sons over the Black Keys and Frank Ocean...

Not that those were necessarily bad albums. Just not “special” like the others.

But I love 4/5 albums nominated for AOTY tonight so I will watch.

My man Shy Glizzy got nominated for this tacky R&B Song w/Goldlink. Hate the song personally but like his verse and support Goldlink bc he's from DC (no fan though) It's pop fluff; no substance.

Pretty predictable. Another year of everyone thinking there’s a clear cut “superior” artist (this year - Kendrick Lamar) only for them not to be awarded in favor for a pop or rock record (this year - Bruno Mars).

Not that Bruno Mars is bad. He’s a good entertainer. But when we’re talking “best” album, most people who have heard the music nominated would say his is the weakest artistically. Literally any of the other nominees should have won that award. I didn’t mind his RecordOTY win. That song sold 100 zillion copies and, at least in my field of employment, I literally cannot avoid it, so that makes sense.

But it’s the same thing every year. The last time I remember thinking the Grammys made the right call in the Album field was way back in 2010 when they gave Arcade Fire album of the year, and they didn’t necessarily have great competition.

The Grammy's have become a pop culture popularity contest rather than a reflection and acknowledgment of artistic music creations. Most popular wins, even when a masterpiece is up against it.

1989: Jethro Tull wins "Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Recording" over Metallica.....'nuff said.
