Everyone, however, agrees kickoffs are the most dangerous play in the sport. The NFL recognized this with its decision to move the spot of the kick five yards back to the 35-yard line. This is Schiano’s plan: Replace all kickoffs with a punting situation, including after the opening coin toss and to start the second half. So, as an example, when Team A scores a touchdown, it immediately gets the ball back on a fourth and 15 from its own 30-yard line. Or it can line up and go for the first down, essentially replacing an onside kick with an offensive play that would require more skill than luck.

Sure itd be weird for a little bit but ultimately the enjoyment of the game would remain the same or better. Im down with changing a KO to a punt. And making the onside kick an actual football play. Think about if it was always like this, would you want to change it to a kickoff?

Heres Adams previous post on the percentages of conversions.

It depends on whether you want the "kicking" team's chances of retaining possession to be higher or lower than they are with an onside kick. When the opponent knows that an onside kick is coming, it's successful only 20 percent of the time. That's slightly higher than the conversion rate on fourth-and-15. On a fourth-and-20, the chances would be even lower than the chances of recovering an onside kick. On a fourth-and-10, the chances would be much higher -- about 35 percent.

Hey, I have an idea.

How about we leave the game alone, like it's been and thrived for our entire lifetime?

Sigh.

So what happens when the league decides that running between the tackles is too dangerous? Or blitzing a QB's blind side? Or blitzing, period?

soccer, basketball, and baseball don't change major parts of the way the game is played, i dont understand the need to do it in football

At this rate I'd probably be all for that proposition.

You're not running over people at top speed in those sports either. I understand the concern for player safety as long as the rules don't hugely impact the game. I think this new kickoff rule does.

Just leave it alone. Actually, move the kick-offs back to the 30. Can someone explain the one point safety? ;)

This.

Unfortunately, it's too late.

They already made changes to the game this season to make touchbacks a lay-up. This change increases the actual football plays.

The idea stinks. Despite the popularity increasing (due to the internet and Fantasy Football) the game itself has declined.

In most sports the old players might not be able to play in the current league. In the NFL most QB's could not survive in the old days (Manning, Brady - LOL, they would get destroyed in an NFL that allowed them to be fair game)

I'm hoping they'll see how bad this rule change is and reverse it back to the way it was for next year.

Manning and/or Brady could play and dominate in all eras.

Skillwise they would but... They would get no protection. "Brady rule"? Come on. They would get creamed. Players may be faster and stronger but they are not tougher, mentally or physically. They would dominate until they got hurt.

Why even prolong it at this point, just slap the flags on them and be done with it

we all know that's where this is heading

They wouldn't be more likely to get hurt than any other QB playing in that era.

I'm not getting the connection. Because the NFL protects the QB now, that means these QB's aren't as tough as the ones from yesteryear.

I don't buy it. Today's athlete is superior to yesterdays'. They're bigger, stronger, faster and better.

Football has changed a ton of rules, unless you were born in 2004.

Totally.Teh game is so soft now practically none one gets hurt anymore!1

By the way, I hate special teams. I like watching offense and defense. Punting, field goals, kick returns, punt returns? Bah, that never feels like football, just stuff you do in between "real" football.
