Rico Gathers. RICO GATHERS! Interesting name isnt it. Even kinda cool sounding. Thats a NAME that just sounds like its right out of central casting to describe an all pro T.E. And his size? He is enormous, with that kind of size/wingspan he JUST HAS TO dominate doesnt he?

Look, I want the kid to play well as much as anyone else, as I do all our players. But the thing is, as Ive said before........LOOKING like you can play, and actually playing, are two very different things. Truth is, he wasnt even all the great of a basketball player either. If he were he would be banging for rebounds in the NBA instead of just scraping by on our practice squad. Just saying,..... some of the Rico stuff I see around here is wayyyyyyyyyyy over the top at times. Lets see what the kid can do, nothing would really surprise me with him given our current situation at T.E. Wouldnt shock me a bit to see him winning the starting gig by mid season or so, also wouldnt shock me a bit to see him not even making the team at all and being cut in camp. Time will tell.

Im sick and tired of Dallas using a draft pick on a project. Its only a waste of roster space. I would be ok if we really had the coaches that can actually coach these guys up. But we don't. So why does Dallas bother drafting these projects?

On the plus side, Rico's certain to get some great coaching, as will all of these young, inexperienced guys. Of course that coaching will be coming from a guy who's never coached TEs, but hey, you can't have everything, right?

But if he can learn the game he has the athletic ability to make an impact
He’s not gonna be the starter and may not even make the team
But he is a very intriguing prospect that was expected to take a long time to develope
But if he can develope he can be a very nice mismatch player

I heard a lot of people say he could have played last season after having a descent preseason with his limited snaps. He looked pretty good. He had trouble blocking as good as Witten.

My enthusiasm and confidence have cooled, but I'm not closing the book on him either. Lots of time before any decisions need to be made.

As a NYer I listen to the podcasts to get the Cowboys fix. A couple weeks ago those guys said he looks slow compared to the other TEs and insinuated he has not gotten better. I think drafting DS and Jarwin keeps him off the 53.

He's a 6th round pick. Those late rounds are all projects or special teams guys. He's a perfect example of a guy you take in the 6-7th rounds.

As a NYer I listen to the podcasts to get the Cowboys fix. A couple weeks ago those guys said he looks slow compared to the other TEs and insinuated he has not gotten better. I think drafting DS and Jarwin keeps him off the 53.

If his weight gain reduces his athleticism, then he's just a lean OT. I sure hope the training staff didn't get him to put that weight on just to block cause if he loses his receiving ability then he's just another large guy on a football field.

Thats pretty much all you get after the 3rd round. Rico was a 7th round pick, project!

Unless he's a prima-donna who thinks he's already arrived and doesn't put in the work, he'll make it into the preseason games with a chance to prove himself, either as an all-around TE or as an elite pass receiver that will allow one to over-look the lack of blocking. He has to be at least average at both or elite as a receiver to make the team. If he isn't and doesn't, who cares?

They haven't used roster space on Gathers. Even so, it's not uncommon for a team to use a very low draft pick for a project anyway - its not just a Dallas thing. 6th round picks very often don't earn a roster spot anyway, so the thinking is why not take a chance on someone with untapped potential rather than draft a more known player that every NFL team agrees wasn't worthy of a higher selection.
