so i was having a discussion with my co-worker who has an internship with scout.com or something and wants to be a sports writer, anyway he at least can talk football but in this convo he said that Anthony Spencer was looking like a bust, i said not a bust but that so far has not (quite) lived up to expectations but that he is actually doing really well, anyway he went on to say that bobby carpenter(did I mention he is an Ohio state homer?) was actually having a better season!

I argued of course that he is the nickle linebacker for a reason and that yeah he might be having a solid season as such but that he has been the major bust so far. i had to tell him when he was drafted as he thought he was a 3rd rounder. this was all just the tip of the iceberg.

in this same convo he bashed romo and said he is not even a top ten QB(he is a pedigree snob) he also said that the reason his stats are good( he is also a stat guy) is because his receivers have helped him out alot( cause all of brady/manning/mcnabb/brees TDs are caught in the end zone right?) he said that witten is not the best TE(you could make the argument for some but..) sited Owen Daniels as being better, not the best but just saying he is better, he said UT players don't do well in the NFL siting Roy(we were going back and forth between college and NFL) said that miles was a flash in the pan, compared jerry to Snyder, and i cant even remember what else.

he also said he is a cowboy fan(yeah right) but that the cowboys would not go anywhere with the current team and management in place. needless to say it was a long 6 hour overnight shift not to mention that my other co workers are cowboy haters as well and while they can add nothing intelligent to the conversation it is really annoying that whenever he would make a point they would chime in with something generic like "thats why they/he sucks"

i know embrace the hate but this is bad, this is a future sports writer and though his passion is college ball he is still getting a head start in his anti cowboy bias. just thought I'd share.

you can make an arguement for everything he said .

#1 Spencer is looking like a bust. he's supposed to be a pass rusher yet half way through the season he has no sacks. I know he has a lot of qb pressures but you gotta sack the qb.

#2 Carp atleast has a sack this season lol

#3 although I don't think he can use the wr excuse for Romo. people can come up with 10 better qbs if they wanted.

#4 Witten being the best is debatable. he's definetly top 3. he does look like he's playing hurt right now though. something isn't right with him lately.

#5 UT players idk. you'd have to look up the players who came from UT and see how many panned out compared to other big schools.

#6 Miles being a flash in the pan could be true. I personally don't think it is but we'll see. remember he was held to just 1 catch albeit a very big catch in his 1st game getting double teamed. let's see how he and the offense adjust to him being doubled from now on.

#7 Jerry isn't that much different from Snyder imo he's just not as bad. I also think Jerry is slowing stepping out of the way and letting his son take more control of the team. Jerry was basically Dan Snyder in the early part of this decade.

#8 this team having success with this current team and management is up for debate too. I mean they haven't done anything yet. hopefully they stay doing what they've been doing lately and end this debate this season.

thats the thing though he is a stat guy and can talk ball and really nobody who is a stat guy can say romo is outside top 10 and nobody that knows football can say daniels is better than than witten unless you hate the boys

The idea that a Cowboy fan would question some of the players on his favorite team is not crazy or out of bounds. Some need questioning.

However, I do find questioning Witten to be a little absurd.

Stats don't tell the whole story sometimes. Your friend needs to pull his face out of NFL.coms stats and look at all the things Witten does.

1. yeah but you cant say carp looks better/is better, one sack or not, pressures lead to bad passes and int's. he also has the most passes defended that is not a DB.

2. see above

3. the WR excuse shows his bias. he cant name them based on stats which is what he is all about and uses, stats dont lie but to make his statement true he uses the WR excuse.

4. i agree, but daniels is not top 3, no matter how you shake it.

5. this wasn't totally about the boys it was UT players vs. OSU players but he kept pointing to roy.

6. i agree but it was this and that and the other about the boys and i said something about miles and he just dismissed him but then later used him in the WR helping romo out arguement.

7. he compaired them saying jerry is trying to buy a championship bringing in T.O. and then the players from last year, but i countered that thomas was out of position and did nothing tank isnt that good anyway and pac the only reason you know his name is because of the off feild problems. then he said the roy trade and i pointed out that he said he wasnt that good himself so if you bring in all these bad players how are you buying a championship.

8. of course it is up for debate but my point was that he was going to any and all lengths to hate on the team.

trust me there was alot more as this convo was going on from about 12:30-6 am

yeah thats all fine but its just the comparisons he makes, like carp over spencer, owen over jason, matt ryan(because he has a playoff win) over romo, just alot of what he says is way out in left field.

Sounds like you know your stuff so MAN UP AND SHUT HIM DOWN.

Tell him he loses all credibility as a writer first and as a fan second when he speaks with an agenda. We all see it every day with national and beat writers and broadcasters. Look how many times we dismiss certain "experts" and won't even consider their takes because we know what's coming.

There are legitimate arguements to make in assessing players and teams but the Rom/Witten comments ultimately doom him.

your coworker is not gonna make it as a sports writer...

1. Know your facts before you make a comment or opinion about a team or player.
  • Carpenter is a bust, 1st rd draft pick
  • Spencer lets give him that 3 yr window that most coaches give players to develop in the NFL...minus the sacks Spencer has actually been very productive
  • Romo is a top ten QB...how can anyone in their right mind not look at his stats and say they'd take 9 more QBs ahead of him...RIGHT!
  • WR help Romo??? Isn't that how the game is supposed to work? I guess Clark and Rice made Montana, or Harrison and Wayne make Manning the best QB playing??
  • Witten ya he sucks...Witten is a top 3 TE...Owen Daniels LOL 8 games and he's suddenly the best?
Bottom line your coworker obviously HATES the Cowboys and knows nothing about football.

:lmao:

oh trust me i had a counter point to everything except i cant defend that he doesnt have a playoff win, except that it took peyton 6 years for his, but he shuts that down with it doesnt matter what peyton does which is true.

i told him that if he writes like this that he wont get a following but the media has proven that hating on the boys = ratings so really who knows? but he wants to cover all things college and except for his total homerism for the buckeyes he is really knowledgable about the programs and scouting and i go to him to ask his opinion on sleepers coming out of college and things like that.

it really is just hate cause he knows(i think) that he is off on somethings but because he is going into the feild everybody takes his points over mine cause they believe he knows more than me but he knows i bring up solid points and know my stuff, i really think part of it is just to ruffle my feathers like the witten/daniels thing but because owen was having a good year this year he got to bring up stats from this year to cite, but i know he whole heartedly does not believe romo to be a top ten QB and wants to draft a "stud". like i said he is a pedigree guy
