The issue of depth

I know we all have watched eight quarters of embarrassing football. Many of us are lamenting the "lack of depth". I know it really does look that way, but I think we are pretty deep at a number of positions.

I read in another thread that not all of our second and third string players will play together. That's certainly the case. Having a regular starter (in some cases, an All-Pro starter), can help cover up any mistakes made by a second-string player.

Let's look at the areas where we have nice depth.

1. CB: We have yet to give up a passing TD. Neither the Chargers or Niners had their WRs running free. Oscan and Carr are solid starters. Corey White has been a nice find. Patmon is beginning to emerge. Claiborne has reportedly had a good camp. We still haven't seen the best of Jones. I like where we are with this group.

2. DE: We are actually getting pressure on the QB. Although we'll miss Hardy for four games, I think we'll see plenty of good quarters from Mincey, Gregory, Lawrence, and possibly Russell. I feel as good as I've ever felt about this position for the Cowboys.

3. TE: Nice depth overall here. We may even keep four TEs. Witten will receive the bulk of the snaps, but the young guys have shown up well.

4. DT: Coleman and Bishop both played well last night. Both Crawfords are proving to be good three-techs. We haven't even seen Hayden and McClain. Nice rotational guys here.

5. OG: Don't laugh. Martin is an All-Pro, Leary is a borderline pro-bowler. I love the potential of Collins. Bernadeau has always been a solid backup at OG and OC.

6. LB: It's easy to look at our first two games an pooh on this. But we haven't seen Lee take the field. Hitchens will be back. I'm not counting out McClain. Gatchkar and Brinkley are solid depth.

Now, there are several places where our lack of depth is frightening.

1. QB: Ugggh.

2. OT: Ugggh...

3. Safety: Now, I understand we have flexibility with Jones and White....but really do we have a true safety on the roster?

4. RB: It's impossible to see what we have. I am frustrated that we haven't seen any RBs with any of our starting OL.

5. WR: Dez make this unit go. Beasley's had a good camp, but I don't think he would be as successful without 88 on the field. T Will has had a good camp too, but I'm not sure how trustworthy he is. Street isn't ready. Replacing Harris is harder than we thought it would be I think.

I think the roster has gotten remarkably better the last few years. Although the little secret is most teams are pretty close in talent level. An Elite QB will do wonders to any team.

Not really. If they were, you might see better performances than what they showed last night. If you are truly deep (i.e. talented), it would be hard to look that inept even if you weren't even trying.

A deep team in today's NFL will cut 3 or 4 guys that they really want to keep.

We are working n 90 man rosters right now. No team is so deep that into the second halves of meaningless preseason games they look good. Even the 49ers who beat us up only scored two touchdowns on defense/special teams in horrific fashion on our part.

I was there. It was an ugly game. Nobody's 90th man looked any good. Except Showers. He needs to make the squad.

Nobody seems to get this and we have these threads every year.

Meaningless games . We are one of the deepest teams in the league and they'll prove it when the games mean something.

No salary cap back then

not disputing that, but for 1 season, it was a heck of line for depth, Cap or not, depending on if some of them were good enough for starters, i know some left to be, but i dont know hwo they panned out in the NFL.

I just don't see them being the deepest team in the league maybe they are with the way the league is any more I just don't have very high expectations that way if things don't work out then you are not so disappointed

With the salary cap structure and how you have a good amount of your salary tied up in your stars, every team struggles with depth. If your concerns are 7th and 8th OL and backup QB, you are in good shape overall.

We are light years ahead of where we can't even name 2 quality starters on the OL.

The Cowboys are loaded compared to most rosters.

When one team is running exotic blitzes and coverages virtually every play to scam their local ticket buyers into believing in a farce......

Dallas was playing vanilla. San Francisco was trying to win the Super Bowl in August.

The 49ers lost 10 starters and their head coach, and they've gone from the NFC West penthouse to the doghouse in three short years. They have a PR disaster on their hands right now that they desperately want to distract their fans from.

Dallas is preparing for a real season with real opportunity. The Cowboys need to nail down a few ancillary spots, nothing more.

Very different dynamics at work.

Judge Dallas more the first half against Minnesota, but even that won't tell much. Dallas does have a hint of surprise for New York in their new offense without Murray. Might as well use it.

What's it going to be then, eh?

Again, a loaded or one of the deepest teams in the league is a little more balanced across the roster. We have some areas, thankfully both lines, that are very deep. But there are some seriously deficient areas where our starters are mediocre or unproven, like RB and S that drags it down. Are we deeper than most recent incarnations? Absolutely.

Today, nobody has depth in a salary-cap era. Dallas is as deep as it gets.

That's why the Cowboys yanked Romo asap. Garrett saw the exotic blitzes that the 49ers were sending and said, nope, not going to risk him tonight.

To me, it's BS when teams come out with that stuff in preseason. It basically takes away your ability to evaluate your players individually, which is the whole point of these games for coaches. Tomsula played like it was to win the division.

But I get it. He's following Harbaugh and his success, and 10 starters just left, got released for stupidity, or quit. It's not good in those parts right now.
