The Jerry/Jimmy Dynamic

How prophetic - "we ought to know by 1992".

That was year Jimmy wins first SB.

I’m not a Garrett basher, but compare that statement to our current ‘process’. Jimmy basically gave himself a two-year deadline. And he was very public about it. SI was undoubtedly the most widely read sports periodical of the day.

Of course it helped that he knew he had 13 picks in the first 3 rounds of the next two drafts. Still, the dude was not lacking in confidence.

Makes me wonder if Garrett’s ‘process’ is sufficiently ambitious.

Jerry had a good blueprint when he first bought the team; hire a football coach/talent-evaluator you believe in (J&J also had a history as teammates on the 1964 Arkansas Nat-Champ team), give him free reign over football operations...and support him 100%.

While realizing Jerry’s ego couldn’t let Jimmy get all the credit for long, which is why he ran Johnson off, Jimmy, who had to have been well-aware of Jerry’s ego, might’ve once in a while mentioned publicly that he worked for the best owner in the game.

Maybe if Jimmy woulda stayed, he mighta won a couple more SBs...and history might today view the Jones/Johnson/Aikman Cowboys like they do the Kraft/Belichick/Brady Patriots?

I still wonder where the franchise would have gone without the Herschel trade. It was pretty much highway robbery by Jimmy and nothing of the sort would be allowed today. Would the Cowboys have won any of those SB’s without that trade? Or would Jimmy have figured it out another way?

Great point. Ego management — our own and that of those around us — is a big part of success in life. I never considered it but Jimmy may have played a role in creating Jerry’s egomania, or at least feeding it and making it grow, by denying him any part of the credit. At the time, Jerry was indeed the best owner in football. Maybe if he’d been recognized as such he wouldn’t have felt the need to pretend he was a football guy.

Jerry knows what worked.

He’s still the best owner, from a financial standpoint, but he’s a mediocre GM.

Since his last SB win which was, granted, well-managed but with a team built by Jimmy, Jerry Jones’ overriding focus continues to be:

Win at least one SB “his way”...and without any influence from Jimmy Johnson.

Maybe. I've watched Stephen Ross write checks left and right to only see the players fail to once again writing huge checks year in and year out. He's willing year in and out to spend money on trying to get the team to improve. He just has the wrong guys once again at GM running the ship, where he should get some blame.

He also paid $500 mil, privately financed, for the renovations for Hard Rock Stadium.

And it was great!!!!
I remember the Giants whining when we put 34 on them, and Jimmy said he didn't cry or whine when teams were whipping our tails and laughing in the 1-15 year.
Besides, if you want to stop us from running up the score, then tell your defense to stop us!

They'll likely never be another Jimmy Johnson. We're too sensitive now.
Jimmy with his bold headlines "We Will Win the Football game!"
His unpredictable onside kicks.
His "I want to score!" right after the 49ers closed to within four in the 92 NFC Championship Game.
His teams that were solid on special teams, offense and defense.
His "How Bout Dem Cowboys" cry.

Man, I miss those days of domination. :(

Strangely enough, many people thought the Cowboys got taken by trading away their best player. They honestly though that the players tied to the draft picks would pose a dilemma for Jimmy.
He end up keeping the players AND the draft pick.
Teams didn't know what hit them with those Cowboys and with Jimmy.
They thought they were way over their heads, but Jimmy was ahead of the league but the league just didn't know it.

Oh, I forgot the interview Todd Christensen had with Jimmy Johnson during the half-time in Super Bowl 27 against Buffalo.
Christensen reminded Jimmy that the Bills pulled an improbable comeback on the Houston Oilers.
Christensen says Jimmy looks at him with a stern face and says, "We're not Houston."

LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!

Its a shame they couldn't work together, crap like this apparently got on Jimmys last nerve:

Or if Jimmy had gone with Steve Walsh vs Aikman.

The reason I made this post was because Jerry KNOWS what it takes to build a winner (hire the best football people possible, get out of the way, and let them do their jobs). The Rooneys live it...and, reluctantly, so do the Maras, for the most part.

22+ seasons into a continuing mediocrity and, primarily due to ego, Jerry still refuses to change.

I’ll always follow and root for the Cowboys, but it shouldn’t hafta be so hard.

Have to disagree as he could quite actually be the worst owner/GM in the league. He bought a highly respected and popular franchise that had been struggling and temporarily assigned the right person (coach) to successfully run it and win like a well oiled machine. He had the blue print and then his own ego slowly tore it apart to appease himself and family by hiring his own FO and coaches so JJ could be called a great GM/football guy. The fact is the franchise has fallin into mediocrity over the past 20+ years. Ironic that his own worst enemy is there in the mirror every morning and he cannot get past his ego to see it. Truly sad that he's taken thousands and thousands of life long fans all over the world to mediocrity with him.

Jimmy didn't have to worry about salary caps,so building a powerhouse was easier.
