we have accumulated loads of top 5-10 talent in the last two drafts without making one trade. Garret is slowly building this team for greatness. These listed below are studs and will be the core of the team in 3-5 years

2014- Byron jones, Randy Gregory, la'el Collins
2015- Ezekiel Elliott, jaylon smith

Dallas is really set up well for the future offensively and potentially have some nice pieces for the defense.

We need a QB now though in a big way.

They have done a good job in this regard but it's going to take one more draft to really hit the jackpot. They are going to need to repeat this process next year with a CB and a WR and we might just be set for a long successful run.

Gregory won't be around that long.

Didn't we make a few trades for Cassell and Bryce Butler?

I see you are probably one of those who credit all thing good with Garrett and all things bad with the front office. Do you really think it was Garrett who convinced La'el Collins to choose the Cowboys? I do not know which was more instrumental in talking Collins to come here, but I would put my money on Jerry.

And, I didn't see any hints of greatness last year, but like you say, 'Garrett is slowly building this team for greatness.' Like slow as molasses or at a snail's pace.

They have been good foundation drafts. The core of the team is being solidly built and they aren't putting themselves in a position to have to overspend in FA.

I was just thinking the same thing you were. I think we're going to look back on these two drafts in a few years and really be thankful. We have some studs on this team that just need a little bit of growth and maturity. I see a ton of pro bowls in the future

I would have to agree with this.

I get the OP's main point, but the building for the future mantra bothers me considering Garrett is one of the longest tenured head coaches in the league. The five or six coaches that are more tenured than him have all won super bowls. We should be where Arizona, Carolina, Green Bay are right now - serious contenders.

Gregory's behavior is a disappointment. As are whatever happened with Lawrence.

I've said you have to look at the draft process in terms of 4-5 year windows. That puts us squarely on the 2013 draft.

I think we're in decent position this year, but I think we're in extremely good position next year.

I did think of this after the Smith pick. Five 1st round talents in two drafts. 4 of the 5 being top 10 talents.

The next coaching staff will have a lot of toys and probably a high pick to find a QB ........ if Jones does not screw it up before then.

Hopefully the next coach will be able to handle Jerry better.

Let's look at results in recent drafts.
2013
Travis Fredrick is a great lineman
JJ Wilcox has started over 30 games so far
Terrance Williams is starter WR for 3 years so far.

2014
Zack Martin awesome pick.
DeMarcus Lawrence has shown the potential to be our best edge rusher for years to come.
Anthony Hitchens has already started 20 games. Recorded almost 200 tackles over 2 seasons. Solid player.

2015
Byron Jones is going to be a starter in our defensive backfield for years.
Rest of the draft's been plagued by injuries. And we still won't see Gregory till at least week 5. He has actually shown promise in his very few snaps. Green and Russell were injured. Collins was solid but an UDFA.

We'll see about this year but Elliott and Tapper probably start week 1 as of now. Collins is a rotational piece. Smith will be our best LB for years to come and a player to build around on defense.

But look at all these drafts and we've built our current roster on solid foundations at the top of these drafts.
