I like perusing mocks. It's a nice amusement that passes the time and makes the pain of a real Cowboys' draft that much more intense when it comes around.
However, I don't care for one aspect of most fan mocks: most of the time there is no basis of comparison to see what you might have done differently. Enter, the big board.
The big board is just as much made up as any mock out there this time of year, but at least it can provide the mock consumer with a point of reference for where the mocker was coming from. But there are also rules.
Trades and slides will happen, always do. But I don't like seeing trades (though I think there's a strong chance of one happening) and slides should be kept at a bare minimum. Plus, people jumping up the boards (though I know it also will happen) should be constrained.
This is why I go by a player's ranking on a big board and use the following rule. Also, I pick 2 alternates. Since in many cases the primary will be gone.
The (x-y) to (x+5y) range rule. Yes, there is math involved. In this x=the pick's number and y=round's number. So for the Cowboys the ranges for player's rankings would break down like this:
1st round (pick 9): 8-14
2nd round (pick 41): 39-51
3rd round (pick 73): 70-88
4th round (pick 105): 101-125
5th round (pick 137): 132-162
6th round (pick 169): 163-199
7th round (pick 210): 203-245 (or to the end)
If you're still reading, you're sick, but let's apply it to a mock. I'll use http://http://www.drafttek.com/ since they have a complete big board (albeit, seemingly questionable). He's who I'd take:
1st - (ranking range 8-14) Derek Sherrod (Cameron Jordan, Von Miller)
2nd - (39-51) Justin Houston (Rodney Hudson, Ahmad Black)
3rd - (70-88) Marvin Austin (Titus Young, Aaron Williams)
4th - (101-125) Danny Watkins (Curtis Brown, Rahim Moore)
5th - (132-162) Phil Taylor (Kendrick Ellis, Clint Boling)
6th - (163-199) Kendric Burney (John Clay, Tejay Johnson)
7th - (203-245) Aldrick Robinson (Rashad Carmichael, Harold Ayodele)
Yep, I'm single with no kids. I have the time to think of these things.
Most big boards only go to 100 or 150 or so, thus you have an abbreviated draft like this one using http://www.draftcountdown.com/Rankings/TOP.php :
1st - (8-14) Von Miller (Aldon Smith, Adrian Clayborn) [clearly a trade down scenario]
2nd - (39-51) Gabe Carimi (Mike Pouncey, Jimmy Smith)

After that, there's no more players so it's over.
So if you're as crazy as me come play along. If not, be so kind as to direct me to your favorite big boards and the closest lithium dispensary.
