Hitchens is bad.

Why don't we move Lee back to MLB?

What has happened with that guy?

I don't get how a player regresses from being a rookie.

Heck... I wish we still had Bruce Carter...

They did everything possible to get that guy out of here but he was a PLAYMAKER on defense. I never wanted to get rid of him but everyone was on the Hitchens bandwagon and probably for good reason considering he was good as a rookie.

does Smith really look like a MLB. I know he played one year at the position before entering the draft but his build looks strong side to me.
I realize they like a speedy MLB today . I guess I'm still thinking old school run game. I dont know/

People are gonna crap when Smith gets bulldozed playing the middle. He should strictly be a strong side LBer. But this coaching staff is gonna play it cute....Just watch.

LBers are minor problems. They were being mauled by OL. Big issue is our DL is being manhandled by one of the worse OL in the league.

I will shake up the DL. Play Thorton and McClain together in the middle which give you more power and McClain still can play 3 tech. Also play Irvin more inside which I think is where he really belongs. He's not a good SDE. Get off the line too slow against T. He's much better at DT.

And yet people were so quick on saying good riddens to Ro before the purple drink incidence!

That dude controlled the middle and is missed big time!

He probably has to have purple drank just to cope with the pain of having to be a 1 man run game stopper in Dallas for 2 years.

I agree, I had high hopes off of his rookie campaign, but he has regressed since then.

I know this was discussed leading up to the game and a number of us had our reservations about how the middle would perform. But it seemed as though the effort was worse than any of us would have ever inagined. While our DTs didn't do much to shore up the most important area of our defense, I felt as though our linebackers were even worse.

I noticed multiple occasions where the linebacker would overrun the play or just blatantly misdiagnosed and hit the completely wrong hole. I ask you this. What are our chances to have both our DTs and our linebackers more focused on stopping the run Sunday? It seems as though the opposing running back had nothing short of third level once breaching the line on several occasions. Where were the heads of our linebackers??? Thoughts?

To me, the middle of the defense is the heart and should be protected at all times. If you want to run on us, go around... But teams should not be able to gash us north south like that. The Giants ran the same play multiple times in a row Sunday and found success every time. I would like to think a Marinelli coached defense is capable of making adjustments on the fly and protecting the heart.
Changes need to be made and fast !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There were a number of writers who said the 2 DT's would be the least of our worries on defense. They got manhandled against NY. We miss Rolando badly and other than Lee our LB's are marginal at best. Hopefully when D. Lawrence, Tapper, & M. Collins get back it won't be quite so bad but I don't think we'll have even an average NFL defense.

McClain seems to be doing his job and getting upfield. Didnt pay enough attention to Crawford, but he didnt jump out. It seems they are finally playing Marinelli's style line like it was designed with the line penetrating gaps. Problem is Hitchens isnt cleaning up. You really need a stout LB crew and Mike in particular to really pull that style off.

I hope that nerve fires up soon. Wont help us this year though

Hate to be Debbie Downer here, but Jaylon Smith is not a take on and shed linebacker. He needs to be kept clean to be effective, and that wasn't something that the DL did a good job with this past weekend.

Smith isn't a thumper at MLB. He's probably best suited for WLB or SLB. He's not much different than Jack, who also isn't a thumper and works best in space.

If we wanted a thumper at MLB in this draft, then Ragland was the guy.

To help some zoners with the differences between linebackers who are thumpers or bring the " wood" vs non thumpers. Here's some pics. Pics don't lie unless photoshopped lol. In all seriousness, do the Cowboys hate muscles? More specifically, do the view muscularity counter to their " fast twitch" fascination. Cause Navarro bowman can cover.

Vs Not Thumpers ( seriously though do we hate getting muscular linebackers?)

I've been of the opinion since I first started scouting Smith that he has to play WLB roll to be successful in the NFL. When blockers get on him he gets swallowed up. Kid can't stack and shed, which makes him a big time liability at MLB IMO. Which is why I've also stated that you have to move Lee back to MLB next year if Smith is ready to go. I think the boys will play Smith at MLB and he is going to look alot like Hitch at times vs the run.

The single greatest thing that scares me about Sunday is seeing our Boys get gashed again up the middle by a team with an absent running game. Lord... I hope they're working on shoring that up this week.

Smith would play the WILL ideally but does have flex and ability to play MLB.

SUMMARY: A three-year starter, Smith started at outside linebacker in Notre Dame’s 3-4 scheme in 2013 before moving to weakside linebacker the past two seasons when the Irish went to a 4-3 base – also put his hand on the ground as an edge rusher at times. A special athlete for the position, Smith jumps off the screen with his sudden pursuit speed and twitchy movements, which compliments his quick-thinking play style. He recognizes things quickly and sniffs out plays with his diagnose skills, putting himself in correct position to close ground in an instant as a run defender and cover in man. Smith does have room to improve his discipline and anticipation, but he is dripping with natural talent and intangibles – type of playmaker you wind up and let loose. Smith, who Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly calls the best player he has ever coached, offers the scheme versatility that will appeal to all 32 teams. He is one of the best players in the 2016 class, but his Jan. 2016 knee surgery puts his draft projection in limbo – might still hear his name called in the top-100, but will require a redshirt year as a NFL rookie.

Brugler summary above!
