Singletary was in many ways the defensive version of Jason Garrett (except without the Ivy League degree) - but a young(er) guy, former NFL player turned coach who many people thought was right on the doorstep to being a head coach.
He takes over a 2-5 San Francisco team for Mike Nolan and proceeds to go 5-4 to finish out the season..things are looking good for the future and it looks like he was the right guy for the job.
Now, we see he probably wasn't. He just hasn't been able to lead the team effectively and the coaching staff he put together just wasn't very good.
I think there's a lot of the keys to winning football games aren't necessarily the X's and O's as much as it is just confidence and feeling good about yourself and your teammates. A lot of time a simple coaching change, a new voice, a new attitude, can be all a team needs for short-term success. You see it a lot in sports like baseball and basketball too. Last year the Colorado Rockies hired Jim Tracy at midseason, they had a huge 2nd half of the season and a run to the NLDS. This year they fell apart and missed the playoffs.
It's going to be interesting to see how Garrett's tenure here is evaluated at the end of the season. I personally don't think he's the right guy for the job and I think we have to be wary of the fact that even if he does scrape together a few wins, that doesn't necessarily mean that he's the right guy going forward.
