The Mike Singletary Dilemma

Singletary was in many ways the defensive version of Jason Garrett (except without the Ivy League degree) - but a young(er) guy, former NFL player turned coach who many people thought was right on the doorstep to being a head coach.

He takes over a 2-5 San Francisco team for Mike Nolan and proceeds to go 5-4 to finish out the season..things are looking good for the future and it looks like he was the right guy for the job.

Now, we see he probably wasn't. He just hasn't been able to lead the team effectively and the coaching staff he put together just wasn't very good.

I think there's a lot of the keys to winning football games aren't necessarily the X's and O's as much as it is just confidence and feeling good about yourself and your teammates. A lot of time a simple coaching change, a new voice, a new attitude, can be all a team needs for short-term success. You see it a lot in sports like baseball and basketball too. Last year the Colorado Rockies hired Jim Tracy at midseason, they had a huge 2nd half of the season and a run to the NLDS. This year they fell apart and missed the playoffs.

It's going to be interesting to see how Garrett's tenure here is evaluated at the end of the season. I personally don't think he's the right guy for the job and I think we have to be wary of the fact that even if he does scrape together a few wins, that doesn't necessarily mean that he's the right guy going forward.

I think Singletary is definately the right guy for SF, the problem is they have no one worth a **** at the QB position.

Have you watched any of their games and seen his coaching decisions? Their problems go far beyond just the QB.

Bingo.

We'll see after the bye week with Troy Smith, though. Could be the spark they need.

They should have kept Shaun Hill if they weren't going to trade for Donovan McNabb.

Scary thought: 49ers with Andrew Luck.

Singletary is not seen as an X's and O's guy, while Garrett is.

Guys play for Singletary though. They push themselves. We shall see if they do that here.

you mean turning around a team won't take work?

don't doubt singletary. if you do you don't get it.

If we have Singletary coaching this team as is from the beginning of the season instead of Wade, we're 6-2

Good post, DW. Yeah, I hope we don't go 4-4 the rest of the year and it fools Jerry into ignoring better candidates in the offseason.

But speaking to Singletary, you gotta love that guy. Besides being a Hall of Fame LB -- not a clipboard holding QB -- he just seems to have that great personality that Garrett lacks. If I were a player, I'd love playing for Singletary. Garrett seems more of the clinical, detached type.

I am a Singletary fan. Been so since things soured on him in San Fran.

We have talented people on the defensive line. We just need a Singletary to yell at them to excel.
These are, after all, athletes, not complex earthlings.

If he gets fired, and Garrett gets the gig next year, I'd love to see Singletary as the new DC. Or Maybe Marvin Lewis.

If it came down to actual game plans, yes Garrett. It's his time to shine.

Anybody backing singletary is out of their mind. The guy is coaching a team that was hands down favorites to win their division, undoubtedly the easiest division in football and he has his team to a 2-6 start. The guy can yell with the best of them but that doesn't win games. How can anybody back this loser?

The fans in SF hate Singletary, btw. And the consensus is there's nothing he can do at this point to save his job.

He's completely unqualified to be HC without having been a coordinator someplace first, but he was a great player and does have a great personality.

This.

I see absolutely no similarities between the two coaches, except perhaps that they are both relatively young.

You are a dreamer.

Maybe if Singletary was a head coach with no OC or DC responsibilities. I like his fire and discipline and think it could make a difference.

But the elephant in the room that you forget is that Singletary would be castrated in Dallas, as well as Wade, Campo, Switzer, Gailey and now Red.

No coach under Jerry (except Jimmy and Bill while he was tolerated) has the authoritative impetus to get the job done. Jerry's whole model works against a Head Coach.

Ultimately Jerry IS the head coach.

Maybe we could bring Patrick Willis over too

But I wouldn't mind Marvin Lewis either. He's was a great defensive coordinator in Washington and pretty much laid the groundwork for that defense the skins have consistently had in the top 10 since he left. I just think he took the wrong head coaching gig. That organization doesn't know the first thing about assembling talent.

Alex Smith, David Carr, Troy Smith. SF's QB depth chart.

No surprise that they won more with Shaun Hill than Alex Smith. He's a bust for a #1 pick, and they need to dump him.
