The Cowboys were 22nd in the NFL last year in defensive 3rd down conversion rate, we were also the worst in the NFC East. At the same time we were only tied for 14th in total offensive plays from scrimmage which was also last in the NFC East. Generating pressure and getting sacks is one way to get stops, but we also need to get more stout up front in order for our offense to get back on the field to score us some points.

1(14) Traded to the Broncos for a 1st and 2nd this year, plus 2nd next year. Broncos have a short window and are going all out with Manning.

1(25) Dont'a Hightower LB Alabama Leader/playcaller of the nation's best defense. Played his entire college career in a 3-4 and has played everywhere from in the middle to having his hand in the dirt. Also a hard worker in the film room and weight room.

2(45) Josh Robinson CB UCF May be the overall winner of the Combine. You know Jerry likes shiny objects, and Robinson certainly shined. Didn't make many INTs in college but he did break alot of passes up and he has explosive ability in the kick and punt return game.

2(57 from DEN) Ben Jones C Georgia Started 49 games at C in his college career, facing NFL quality defensive lineman in the SEC. Should push for a starting job from day 1 and his durability on a line that has seen its fair share of injuries is much welcomed.

3(81) Josh Chapman NT Alabama This is my pet cat right here. He's strong as a bull, got the perfect stature for a NT, and may have the best ability to anchor out of anyone in the draft class. He's also not a stiff, straight line player like Ta'amu and is able to create a little pressure of his own.

4(113) Brandon Taylor S LSU Minus the forced fumbles/recoveries, his numbers where nearly identical to the honey badger. He has been overshadowed in a talented secondary, but he's a high school CB with good coverage ability and is willing to hit. Was also one of the leaders of the LSU football team on and off the field.

4(135 comp) Brock Osweiler QB Arizona St I can already hear the boos for this pick but he's another one of my pet cats. He's taller than your average QB, but not many QBs had basketball scholarship offers to Gonzaga like he did. If he's here his accuracy and arm strength make him a great project QB.

5(152) Terrance Ganaway RB Baylor He can beat out Tanner for the #3 RB spot immediately. May be similar to Vickers, but I think his power, pass catching, and blocking would make him a valuable asset.

6(186) George Bryan TE NC St Not much of a threat as a pass catcher, but is reliable when called upon. His main asset is his blocking ability, and he should hopefully make us forget that Bennett is gone.

7(222) Terrance Frederick CB TAMU Has shown good durability throughout his career, starting since a freshman. He showed that he was a little quicker than Coryell Judie at the combine and has produced throughout his career, including showing a willing to tackle and make playing in the backfield.

Thoughts/commentary/criticism?

Good post. I like your descriptions of the players and really like using a high pick on a center.

I would love that trade. You made a lot of good picks but also a few that I don't like.

1(14) Traded to the Broncos for a 1st and 2nd this year, plus 2nd next year. Broncos have a short window and are going all out with Manning.

There will several better OLB prospects available here or later. I don't really want to draft an ILB this high and I question Hightower's coverage ability at ILB.

2(45) Josh Robinson CB UCF May be the overall winner of the Combine. You know Jerry likes shiny objects, and Robinson certainly shined. Didn't make many INTs in college but he did break alot of passes up and he has explosive ability in the kick and punt return game.
Excellent prospect, IMO. I didn't look at his stats, but he appeared to get his hands on a lot of balls in the games I watched.

2(57 from DEN) Ben Jones C Georgia Started 49 games at C in his college career, facing NFL quality defensive lineman in the SEC. Should push for a starting job from day 1 and his durability on a line that has seen its fair share of injuries is much welcomed.
I'm in the minority on this player, but I just don't see it. In the games I watched, he got pushed into the backfield multiple times, was on the ground a lot and looked unathletic and akward in open space. Philip Blake is better, IMO.

If you tell me he can rush the passer, then I'll give this pick thumbs up. The Boys need more than just a run-plugger.

I give this pick a maybe. He looked good in game footage, but is he a better athlete than Barry Church?

OK.

OK.

Yes, they need a blocking TE.

I'm not a big fan of 5-9 CBs. I would prefer Coty Sensabaugh or Ron Brooks or Chris Greenwood at this pick.
