Nobody has more unrealistic expectations put on them than pass rushers, especially with our "knowledgeable" fanbase. The #1 player in the league in terms of QB Sacks, Hits, and Hurries is Michael Bennett with 52 of them on 489 snaps. That means 10.6% of his plays he's harassing the quarterback, and the other 89.4% of the time he isn't. So when you see in a game thread someone say "Ware will have one big play and then 9 when he doesn't do anything" people should know that is legitimate elite performance. It might not be what you want to see as an irrational fan, but in comparison to his peers it is a high level of place.
DeMarcus Ware is still in the top ten in terms of Sacks/Hits/Hurries per snap played. Beyond stats he's grading out very favorably as a pass rusher and is amongst the top of the 4-3 ends in terms of run defense. For the more advanced stat crowd, he's 3rd in ProFootballFocus' Pass Rushing Productivity percentage. The film in no way, shape, or form fits the narrative of the message board, as hard as that may be to hear for some people that just want to plug their ears and blame Romo, Witten, and Ware for the current state of this team.
DeMarcus Ware Pass Rushing Productivity Snaps per PFF:
2013: 11.8 (3rd in the league amongst 4-3 DEs)
2012: 11.4 (3rd in the league amongst 3-4 OLBs)
2011: 12.9 (4th in the league amongst 3-4 OLBs)
2010: 12.7 (4th in the league amongst 3-4 OLBs)
2009: 12.3 (2nd in the league amongst 3-4 OLBs)
2008: 9.3(4th in the league amongst 3-4 OLBs)
If you want to tell me it's become slightly harder for pass rushers to impact plays on a play-by-play basis because of more spread formations and quicker release times out of quarterbacks you probably have a point. But if you want to say that DeMarcus Ware has dropped off or is not performing at the level of an elite pass rusher in comparison to his peers you are 100% incorrect, and there is truthfully zero argument on the other side.
