OK, quick story. My daughter sings, IMO she sings well, I live in NJ and we're only about 20 minutes from First Energy Park where the Lakewood Blueclaws (Philly's farm team) play. So I was doing a search to see how to get my daughter an audition to sing The Star Spangled Banner at a Blueclaws game. As it turns out they held open auditions on March 18, so we're out of luck there.
But when I did the search for 'Blueclaws National Anthem' something came up that I found disturbing. Now I'm not an overly patriotic type, nobody has ever accused me of being a jingoist, but I think that things like the national anthem are to be taken seriously - and that goes for anyone's not just ours. I don't think they are supposed to be cute or funny. And I came across a video that, at least to me, destroys the seriousness of the song and makes a mockery of our national anthem.
A few weeks ago the Blueclaws had a 2 year old 'sing' the national anthem. And I use the term sing loosely, it was obvious listening to it that the kid didn't know the words and was only repeating general sounds that he had heard from others. It was essentially the human equivalent of when a dog howls and it sounds like,'I love yooouuuuu.' Obviously I don't blame the kid, he's freaking 2. I don't even really blame his mother, because people can be blind when talking about their own kids. But I definitely blame the morons from the Blueclaws who heard that kid 'sing' and decided it was worthy of being done at their stadium. I think the stadium holds 7,000 - so it's not like he was doing it at the Death Star - but if you're in charge of a venue where potentially thousands of people are going to stand for the national anthem, don't you owe it to them to find someone who can actually perform the song?
So am I just being overly sensitive here or what? Or am I right in that sometimes cute just isn't called for and it isn't enough?
