No, I am not talking about the defense, even though I think that they will be much improved this year after focusing on it during the offseason, but I tend to look at the glass half full and all of that. I am talking about the modern-day Dallas Cowboys fan that hasn't seen a championship in 25+ years. It's been a rough patch, for sure.
These fans lambast everything Cowboy and think that Jerry Jones is the antichrist to our squad. They look for any evidence of imcompetence, malfeasance and downright stupidity and they have that hindsight 20/20 vision in spades.
For instance, let's take a look at Mike McCarthy. If you harken back to the year leading up to the C word, you will remember that Jason Garrett was shown the door and the Dallas Cowboys were in need of a new Head Coach. At the time, it was McCarthy, who had actually won a Super Bowl, and several up and coming college coaches that were shots in the dark because it is very hard to see how a college coach would translate to the pro game.
Also figuring into the equation was the fact that we had not gotten a ring in many years and that Jerry Jones was in his late 70s and time was of the essence for him. A proven head coach with a track record in the league was the safer bet than an unproven coach in the college ranks. And the journey to the promised time should be able to accomplished in a quicker time, which was really important to the owner but also to the fans that had waited so long.
Fast forward to today and you will see how the Doomsdayers are now claiming that they were not on board with the McCarthy hire, how he was hired because he is a yes man, and that he should be fired ASAP. I even read posts that wanted him fired after the Hall of Fame game earlier this month.
This after one year as Head Coach, and that one year being the strangest one that any of us had ever encountered in our own life, let alone in the life of an NFL Head Coach. The Doomsdayers have made up their minds and are gleefully jumping on Jerry for making such a poor choice to lead our team. In my mind, he is still a good hire and will prove that in the upcoming season and the seasons to come.
That is just one facet of the team that has been fair game because of our long drought without the ultimate prize. Despite being one of the best drafting teams in the league, I've read many times how inept they are at drafting on this forum. Despite being one of the top QBs in a league that is bereft of good QBs, I've read how we will never win anything with Dak at the helm. The list goes on. About everything that this team does because we haven't won a championship in over 25 years.
People on this forum are now happy if the Cowboys lose so that they can give us an I-Told-You-So. Many of the regular posters, and you know who you are, regularly trash the players and the organization because it's been so long.
I get it. Fandom hurts when you don't have anything to celebrate. Negativity can creep in and, boy, has it ever!! 25+ years of futility causes dissension in the ranks and doubt because the prevailing wisdom is that they are losers until they are not.
I appreciate how the mindset of the fans has changed over the years. We got spoiled winning three Super Bowls in the 90s and then nothing since. It almost seems like a curse to have that much success and an albatross to carry forward.
I've been a fan since 1970, owing that to Roger Staubach and that Doomsday defense, and I have been through many good times and many bad, especially recently. But to me, every year is a new year, every draft pick is a potential star and every game is an exciting event. Don't get me wrong, I get upset when they play like crap and will even shut off a game that pains me because they are not performing to my expectations. Comes with the territory.
As far as Jerry Jones goes. he's the owner. He's passionate about the team. He wants to be involved. He wants to be on camera. Nothing I can do about it so why worry about it? I feel like he has taken a step back in the day to day and wants his team to win another championship as much as we do. All I can ask.
Now I know that you Doomsdayers will jump on this and tear it apart. I will get the Homer label. But that's OK. I am a Homer. Proud to root for the Dallas Cowboys!! Let's Go Cowboys!!
