Does anyone else think this is ridiculous? Because i do and decided to discuss it. Want to hear opinions.

"This is not going to be a long post, but it has to be discussed. Obviously this is purely based on opinion, so take it for what it is.

First off lets start by saying, the reasoning for this rule coming into place makes sense, to prevent injury."

A bit of advice. If you're going to write about a rule, you should specifically state (or quote) the rule itself so the reader doesn't have to leave your site to find out exactly what you're talking about. :)

I like the rule......everyone says it wussifies baseball but why should contact be allowed against the guys at their most vulnerable.......baseball isn't a contact sport, except at the bases and that is being changed....the call against Bautista was correct in any era....you can't reach out and grab a guy's leg just like you can't slap the ball out of a guy's glove or run him over on the bases.....

Now are they going to make the middle infielders actually be touching 2nd base with the ball in their glove/hand before they step off.

Its not as ridiculous as the catchers interference rule but its pretty close. Its a sport there is a chance people are going to get hurt. Kyle Schwarber tore his acl today colliding with Dexter Fowler going after a fly ball, I guess next year we can expect a rule where only one outfielder go for the ball at a time.

I've always thought that was ridiculous so I like the rule. All it says is you have to make a legitimate effort to reach the bag, you can still initiate contact.

I dont think that is how they are calling it. Bautista reached out and touched a foot and Rasmis slid past the bag and they called it on both of them. In Bautistas case it cost the Blue Jays the game.

This is it. If you are going to institute these kinds of rules, then you better call a game the way the rules are stated. You have to touch the bag and if you don't, then it's not an out. You can't be around the bag, you can't make a half arse attempt at the bag, you can't just completely ignore the bag and pivot with a throw to 1st and get an out called. That's BS.

If you are going to make this kind of rule, then you better call the game according to the rules. For years, defenses have been able to get away with not touching the bag because "it created to much room for injuries". Well, now the rules have been changed so lets start calling the game according to the rules.

I agree with the rule, and I agree with the defenders actually having to touch second. Thumbs up in my book.

As for the Bautista one, that's a double play in any year, you can't reach out and grab the defender. Good call.

Still calling the out when the infielder is just "around the bag". Saw it again just last night. Gotta be honest, I don't like this rule change.

Telling a veteran of the game to change something they have trained to do and have been allowed to do forever is not fair to the players either. That would be like someone telling you after 15 years, that you can no longer login to your computer a certain way or you’ll be suspended. Its crazy to think that grown men who have played this sport all their lives are going to simply forget what they have learned and done all their lives. And its a damn shame.

Players slide all the time in a manner that doesn't cause an unnecessary collision. Pretty much any stolen base would provide a good example.

Going out of their way to initiate contact is a deliberate act, not some sort of muscle memory that cannot be broken.

I agree on the surface but I will say this. I saw a game just the other day, can't remember which one now, where they turned a double play off a bunt. The short came over to cover and the base runners was in a perfect position to break up the double without leaving the base path and he pulled up and turned out towards the outfield. That was a close double play and in the old days, they never would have turned it. The base runner didn't break it up and they were out of the inning. The announcers immediately commented that this was the new rule. I'm a bit of an old hat (and some would say that you can add a three letter word in front of the word hat) on things like this. I don't think you should slide well out of the base path to break up a play but if it's around the bag, I think it should be allowed. That's part of the game and I don't think it should be removed.
