John Lynch and Champ Bailey asked if they could wear a #27 jersey in honor of the teammate Darrent Williams, who was killed in a drive-by. But the NFL said no to that. I mean really, its the Pro Bowl!!! Let them wear it if they want.

Some of the NFL rules are just dumb. Like when Unitas died Manning wanted to wear a different colored shoe in honor of him. But was denied because thats not the color of shoe the team wheres or something. Come on

I just don't see the harm in Lynch and Bailey wearing their departed teammate's number in the Pro Bowl.

There is a lot of dumb rules out there.

They were actually going to fine Jake Plummer for wearing Pat Tillmans number on his helmet.

Oh I just found out a dumb college rule today.

Former players cant talk to recruits... Are you kidding me? Dumbest rule ive ever heard.

At what point is there just things the universties just have no control over?

I wondered at the time why the Colts didn't just all switch over to the type of shoe that Peyton wanted to wear, just for that one game...

For an NFL team, it wouldn't really have been that big an investment, and they could probably have gotten a lot of it back by putting the shoes up for sale in their pro shop after the game...

Neither do I...

Don't forget the NFL has contracts (big paying contracts) with major shoe companies and these probably exclusive which requires all NFL players to wear their brand of shoes. NFL is whole about money. What do they care if Unitas died or Tillman. Remember when Aikman was playing he wore a different shoe (think it was a shoe) and got fined $40,000 for it but when an NFL player does something really stupid they fine him a paltry $7,000 for it. Maybe the new NFL commissioner will do better job then Tag did in this regard. But would like to see the NFL get rid of some of its dumb rules, for example: a team must declare x number of players to be inactive for each game and this even holds true for the SB. Why? It's probably one of the great moments in a players NFL life yet he must sit in the stands cause his team is forced to identify x number of players inactive for that game. This rule also causes problems otherwise. When Parcells is forced spend time keeping certain player available for the game because he's got to have certain number of players who inactive. It's just plain dumb. I know the old story is that injuried players would be inactive so it helps them out, but frankly I think it's an old rule which causes more dumb problems then is necessary.

Also think the NFL rules re PS players is dumb. In order to put a player on PS, each player must make it thru waivers. I think each team should be allowed put 2 young developmental players on PS w/o being forced waive them.

The NFL was already planning on all the players wearing #27 decals on their helmets. When they realized that's what was going to be done, Lynch and Champ were okay with it.

And now that I know the rest of the story, I feel better too... thanks for telling us about that, Mike...

But the other examples are whats wrong with big time sports today. I hope that the new Commish will be willing to make exceptions for the likes ot Tillmand and Unitas in the future; and tell the shoe companies, etc that if they don't like it we can always replace you real easy.
