The NFL's Win-Win Labor Agreement

You are trying to turn it into something else.

I think we will let this go for right now as it is of interest to the cowboys and the NFL future concerning the labor agreement.

However there will be no political discussions or bringing up of politicians and the like by people in this thread.
If they do they will get a vacation...no warning other than this post. That includes smart quips about it.

So please keep it on topic of the Cowboys, Jerry Jones or the NFL.

Interesting article, but I can't say I agree with it.

How can you compare salaries with franchise value? That would be like having to claim the appreciation on your house as part of your income, when in reality it's just an estimated number until you go to sell or refinance.

So what you're saying is until you pay capital gains it's not income right? :laugh2:

I didn't see where it predicted the score of the game or Dez's stats, so it is useless to me!

You will think differently next fall if you turn your TV on to watch the Cowboys and see a bunch of replacement players or no football at all.

I think the keys to labor peace are not far out of the grasp of the NFL and NFLPA.

First, the NFL has to give the NFLPA something. Whether they promise more franchises meaning more jobs or they increase roster sizes meaning more jobs, I think they absolutely have to give the NFLPA more jobs.

I also think if they go to an 18 game season they need to increase all of the current salaries incrementally based upon the per game earnings. It would be monumentally pompous to not understand that a reduction in per game salaries is not going to sit well with the players.

To offset this cost the NFL needs to add more televised games. No more split doubleheaders for CBS and FOX is a nice start. Give us 2 games each week for each network. The increased coverage for each network should be almost enough to cover the exponentially increased player salaries.

I do expect something in the long run should happen. The only stumbling block that I see would be if Smith is trying to prove his chops and differentiate himself from Upshaw who seems to be viewed as closer to the owners pocket.

There's just too much money to be lost by everyone to not figure something out that will work for everyone. Players should get 2 extra game checks. Owners need to get some increased TV revenues one would think, to combine with the increased sales in tickets/concessions it really just seems like a win/win all around. I can also see the argument for making the 53 more like a 58 man roster and up the actives by 2 or 3 also.

got it in one Hos. The rosters MUST be increased; that is clear to anyone with a brain.

I did not like Upshaw, mainly due to his treatment of the older players. But he did oversee people who saw their
salaries increase by an incredible amount over the time he was Union Chief. What more could anyone ask?

Here's the big thing for me. NFL Players are guaranteed to make money if they make a roster. NFL Owners are not guaranteed to make money just because they own a team. They should if they do their jobs right.

I think the timing of this in a recession period is really unfortunate. I do not feel sorry for either side.

Increase rosters to 60 and 50 active each week. It gives the NFLPA 224 new jobs and 160 of them are active.

How is that not good for the NFLPA?

Hey, I yearn for the glory days of Cornell Burbage as much as anybody.

This makes so much sense, which means it will be like ripping out fingernails to get this to happen, unfortunately.

Those of you with billion dollar investments, wouldn't the expectation be that the investment's cash flow would be enough to pay the interest to the bank while waiting to cash in?

Judging from the Forbes' list, the Cowboys maybe the only team that could do that based on the current value of the teams.

An 18 game regular season will usher in even more meaningless games at the end of the year, and will push physically blown out players even further, leading to more injuries.

It's a stupid move, made by the bean counter king. While it may mean more money for the owners, it is going to lead to major collapses of team seasons due to important players getting injured more often. Or perhaps even more 'play nice' rules for the refs to enforce. Not even expanded rosters will offset this.

I don't see any way around it, sadly. The union should require some serious concessions or additions to offset the added field time and injury concerns.
