The Nickel Package

Ok, So It seems the coaching staff is really hoping to push McClain into this starting MLB position but he doesn't seem to be in a physical condition to be a 3 down type player as of right now. What would everyone think about placing Church at MLB & bringing in Dixon to SS during nickel packages or as well as the slot CB to replace the SLB? I've heard multiple people speak on the subject of trying to convert Church to a LB by why Convert him when you could just place him a one in specialty packages to relieve our 2 down thumper MLB?

I wouldn't be shocked if they did that on occasion; however, while Dixon looked good in the 1 preseason game, I'm skeptical that he's really ready to play Safety in real games. He had some questionable play in coverage and wasn't really put into many difficult coverage situations in that game.

IMO the Nickel LB situation took a big hit with the Holloman injury. He was probably the best LB in coverage.

Cowboys played in Nickel 61% of the snaps in 2013.

I agree the loss of Holloman was a giant blow which is what really left me pondering what Dallas will do if McClain is who they want to start put he isn't prepared to be a three down player. I don't see Hitchens as the answer to that right now.

The Nickel LB is the biggest concern for me at this point. I expect it to be Durant and ???

Bruce Carter has the speed but he had problems in coverage last season.
Hitchens is a rookie who they probably weren't really thinking Nickel LB when they drafted him.
Cam Lawrence appears to know what he's doing this year, but I don't think he has the speed required.
Will Smith fits the mold of a Nickel LB but has barely practiced/played in the preseason.
Wilber is expected to play DE in the Nickel.

They might want to see if ole Kevin Burnett is still hanging around looking for a job.

If they don't sign another player it seems to be Carter by default.
