Brad Sham said during the radio broadcast of the game that with the loss tonight, Dallas has the 11th pick and the 20th pick (from buffalo).

I can live with that. We should be able to make a considerable improvement to our talent level with 2 of the top 18 picks and 3 of the top 40. add 3- 4 FA's. That would be 6-8 new starters for next year. If we can just get a real QB i.e Henson or FA and a new def coordinator to lead this team, we may be in good shape.

If you read what Hos posted earlier, I interpret the above to mean Dallas (via Buffalo) picks 20th unless one of Minnesota or St. Louis advance to the SB in which case we would pick 19th.

Oh well, our pick will be better than the one we traded away anyway.

I believe this is correct. Playoff teams ALWAYS draft lower than non-playoff teams despite their records.

GBN knows this stuff cold. Why would whatever happens to Minn and StL in the playoffs affect the draft position of Buffalo, Jax and Baltimore who didn't make the playoffs if that were the case.

If you look back at what Hos posted, the issue is that the draft will go off roughly as listed. The major exception being possible re-slotting for the SB teams who pick 31 and 32. Thus, the only way our pick changes from 20th is if Minn or St. Louis advance to the SB in which case we will pick 19th.

Because I always thought playoff teams automatically finish ahead of non-playoff teams no matter their records. Maybe I'm wrong.

If I am, I won't feel too bad since all these "official" draft order sites are showing different results.

Unless the Rams or Vikings go to the Super Bowl, our pick from Buffalo will be 20th. The ONLY teams that are not put in order based on their record are the Super Bowl winner and loser. Every other team remains in their "segment" -- their group of teams with the same record.

Sounds good to me. Confirms what Brad Sham said on the radio as well.

The last 12 picks were all playoff teams in the last draft. Thats why Miami picked 2 spots ahead of us last year when we both had 10-6 records even though their strenght of schedule (the first tie-breaker) was .512 and ours was .461.

"Playoff teams fill out positions 21-32 based on the round in which they exit the playoffs." Sportsline.com

EDIT: This is from CNNSI - "The Super Bowl winner and loser will draft 32nd and 31st, respectively. Other playoff teams, as they are eliminated from the postseason, move to the end of their group regardless of strength-of-schedule."

And from about.com - *The first 20 teams are determined by record. The order of playoff teams is determined by when they are eliminated from post-season play"

Last year, there were no playoff teams with a worse record than a non-playoff team. Playoff teams go at the bottom of a segment (teams with the same record), but they never go outside their segment unless they make the Super Bowl.

Sportsline.com is wrong. An 8-8 playoff team that doesn't make the Super Bowl would draft before a 9-7 non-playoff team, or even a 10-6 non-playoff team, if there were any.

In 1999, Seattle had our draft pick from the Galloway trade at No. 19. The Seahawks, despite the Cowboys going 8-8 that season and making the playoffs, drafted one spot ahead of the Carolina Panthers, who did not make the playoffs.
