The old guy I wish I could thank

When I was 5, I was in the hospital for a month with pneumonia. Because I was such a little kid, they let my mom stay with me in the hospital room. It sucked. It meant struggling to breathe in an oxygen tent about once a day and getting antibiotic shots in my hiney. Not fun for a little kid, or anyone really.

One day, when my mom had left to do do something, an elderly gentleman showed up with a ray gun for me. It was actually a flashlight in the shape of a campy, Buck Rogers kind of pistol. I was happy to have it. I crawled under the bed to fight off any Martians that might be there. When I pulled the trigger, it would shine its light. Then my mom got back to the room, at first she thought I wasn't there, and she kind of freaked out, but I told her I was under the bed. For some reason, she thought it was strange for me to have crawled under a hospital bed.

To this day, I don't know who the elderly man was. At 5 years old, you don't know to thank people who do something nice for you. If he was from the town we were from, he would have had to have driven about 40 miles to bring that to me. If he was from my parents church, the drive would have been much shorter. (We used to drive 40 miles every Sunday to go to the church my parents preferred.)

This was decades ago, so that elderly gent is long gone for sure, so I couldn't thank him even if I wanted to. But if I could, I would. Even if I could find his family members, I would tell them that I'm grateful for his kindness. I asked friends and family if they know who did that, but no one knows. It's one of my life's mysteries.

Oftentimes, some of the most influential people come into our lives unexpectedly and disappear in much the same way. I think most of us have experienced such blessings and just wonder how it ever came to be. Thinking back, it gives us great feelings to receive such wonderful luck. Life is good.

When I was about 4 years old I fell in a creek. I didn't know how to swim yet, and began to drown. A twelve year old kid named Robert pulled me out of the creek and saved my life. I don't think he knew that he had actually saved my life. I haven't seen Robert since then, and who knows where fate took him in life decades later, but I will forever be thankful.

13 years old. Parents split up and had moved to a different neighborhood. Had a flat tire on my dirtbike. Was struggling to get the wheel off with basically a screwdriver an adjustable wrench and a hammer lol. Old guy next door who I hadn't met yet comes out and asks me if I could use some help. Pushed the bike over to his garage, used his tools and his advice and got the tube patched and back in business. Spent a lot of time in that garage over the next year that we lived there. One day we moved and I never saw him again.

It took hindsight to understand just how much his presence in my life at that time mattered. Wish I had let him know when I had the chance.

Lost my father to cancer when I was 12
There were several older men over the next ten years that were not related that helped me grow up. They are all gone now; I wish I had a chance to thank them.
