The one bad thing about having two good quarterbacks

Given the results of the most recent Quarterback Poll, where 56.3% of the voters wanted Dak to remain quarterback and 43.7% of the voters wanted Romo to be the starting quarterback, it is clear that one quarterback will be blamed for anything less than a Super Bowl win.

Why? Simple. If the Cowboys lose in the playoffs or even the Super Bowl, you will see post after post where fans say, "If <insert the other quarterback's name here> had been starting, we would have won that game.", no matter who started the game.

I bring this up now to remind everyone that no matter what happens, the Cowboys have a bright future ahead with several good young players on both sides of the ball and hopefully more will be coming in the draft next year.

If Dak is the starting quarterback and we fail to win a Super Bowl, that will be great experience for him and the team as well, and they can build on that for next season. If for some reason Romo returns as starting quarterback and we fail to win a Super Bowl, we can look at it as he got his final shot after everything he has done for the Cowboys and going forward, we have a new franchise quarterback in Dak that we can look forward to competing with for several years.

After last season, most people were not expecting Dallas to make it to the Super Bowl this season despite getting Romo back. Was he going to last 16 games? Was our defense going to be bad? Was 2014 a fluke? There were so many unanswered questions, and yet here we are, 11-2 with a rookie quarterback.

No matter what happens the rest of the season, the future of the Cowboys looks much brighter than it did 5 months ago. We should all remember that and focus more on enjoying this season rather than stressing over every game as if it is now or never.

cheers (coffee) to that! In my wildest dreams, I never expected us to be 11-2 and clinch a playoff spot after last season. That combined with gaining a franchise RB, most likely a franchise QB and not to mention how solid we are in so many skilled positions, we are positioned for some good times ahead.

If someone cannot find satisfaction in what's been accomplished so far and how bright our future looks, I'd have to imagin perfect seasons and Super Bowl rings every year is to them the only things that would constitute success.

Amen. Whatever happens with these guys this season, we had an A++ draft and put the team to in position to compete for several years. Our rivals have not done the same.

Nature of fandom man. Will keep things interesting in the offseason.

For me its not just about 2016. Its about 2017, 2018, 2019, ect... If Dak is truely the awnser, the future is very very bright. And no reason for me to think he wont be. People forget Romo really struggled in December of 2006. Romo made a huge leap in 2007. Dak is a major self starter, so I see a much more complete player in 2017

Amazing how differently things looks now as opposed to this time last year.

I think some of what is fueling the win it now mentality is the recent playoff past.
2007, 2009, and 2014 all great years followed up with fall of the cliff years the next season.
This years team should only get better next year. They are young and appear hungry . The future looks brighter this time around

A good reason to give Tony at least a try before the playoffs. Lets see what he can do now that he is rejuvinated and feeling better. Let him play a half or so. Maybe these last 3 games can be use to let Tony and Dak compete.

Unless Dak gets injured we will not see Romo again. Any one who EXPECTED a SB let alone a SB win with a rookie QB isn't being realistic any way. This season ha been very entertaining to say the least no matter how it ends. We have seen that life after Romo may not be as bad as we thought, that alone is a huge plus. If we get deep in the playoffs, that would be awesome. Play in the SB would be beyond awesome.

You go with the guy who won you 11 in a row. Jimmy Johnson said it best people look at Romo's body of work and want him back in, but he hasn't played much football in a few years, in fact only 4 games since the famous Dez "catch" debacle in January 2015 and he struggled in those games. The last two times he came back from injury he struggled. Neither are guaranteed to win you a Super Bowl so just ignore all the chatter about the other one would have won if the one in there didn't. We live in the real world not a hypothetical one.

Well said.

My girlfriend keeps telling me "You know they're going to let you down and break your heart like they always do!" To which I've responded that yes, while I want them to win the Super Bowl this year, knowing that this team has such a bright future is very encouraging and will help soften any potential playoff letdown.

Personally, my preference would be to insert Romo (if necessary) to try and win it all this year, rather than use 2016 as a growing opportunity for Dak and a playoff bounce. But I'll support whoever they put out there, and I think either one of them gives us a chance. Romo a better chance, but don't sleep on Dak.

Break up with her unless she becomes more positive about the Cowboys. Can't have that negativity so close to home. And I also agree with everything you said. I'd rather win it this year with Romo and then continue on with the bright future with Dak and hopefully win am couple more with Dak. Cuz I see a lot of success and winning in our future with Dak Zeke and the oline. I don't want to always wonder what Romo could have done with this oline and Zeke.

But I really agree with the OP. If we lose in the playoffs or super bowl I am NOT looking forward to an offseason of "we would have won if (insert QB's name) would have played" and then the subsequent arguments until next opening day. Cuz just like OP said, 5 months ago we did not have that bright of a future as a franchise. Romo is getting old and just got reinjured, Garrett is still the coach, we had no clue what Zeke would do, our defense stunk. Now as of today our Next franchise QB is set and has 12 games of invaluable rookie snaps and he's legit, Garrett looks like Coach Of The Year, Zeke is a beast and our defense is better than we thought (especially when Mo gets back).

Things are looking up

I am still not sure we have two good quarterbacks. I know we have one good QB and a good rookie who may be good but has issues that he may or may not correct/overcome.

Mechanics are just part of the problem. Anticipation and an ability to consistently make throws when players aren't wide open may be an even bigger issue. There is no guarantee that these things will come with work and experience. Dak does seem to have the right attitude and work ethic, but that will only go so far.

In 1977 Tom Landry alternated his QB's in the same game(s) to find the starter. Staubauch won and Morton went to the Broncos and faced them in the Super Bowl.

Where is the evidence that the Cowboys have two good QBs on the active roster?

Landry alternated QBs vs the Bears in 1971, not 1977. Dallas lost, Staubach was named the starter, and the Cowboys didn't lose another game that season.

Morton was shipped to the Giants before eventually landing in Denver in 1977, and getting destroyed by the Cowboys in the Super Bowl.

I'm hoping the Cowboys take the next two, clinch home field, then Romo plays the entire week 17 game to shake off the rust. Never know if/when we might need him.

I don't think this is the time for a QB competition.

OK Thanks for clarification. The documentary I saw was about 1977 but they were then going back in time obviously.

What bothers me is some want Romo back so bad they seem to be pulling against Dak as if Romo has another 7 years left.
