A pass rushing Ware that is allowed to take an inside rush. For the life of me I didn’t understand why in the previous season that A. Ware wasn’t allowed to rush more often and B. When he did rush he seldom used an inside rush or spin move.
This is what made Charles Haley so effective, imo. He had the ability to set up his moves based on making the OT guard against the inside rush. I don’t know if this was discussed but this is huge for advantage for Ware. An offensive lineman best defense against a speed rusher rushing outside is to get his head back, set his feet, and force a speed rusher wide or allow him to take his self out of the play. It is almost like a CB using inside technique so he can use the sideline to his advantage when he is trying to force the WR to take an outside or arc release.
The best counter to that is to have your outside rusher cross his face whether in a stunt or on pure pass rush move. This has a confounding effect because it slows the OT out the blocks, which makes it very difficult to over play the outside rush because when a rusher takes a hard move inside the OT footwork and technique are different. In other words, the lineman has to be more technically precise because he can’t rely on the rusher rushing his self out of the play. Also, if they guess wrong the QB is dead, plus the inside rush sets up a spin move back to the outside, a.k.a. the ice pick! IMO, the inside rush coupled with Ellis being back just added about 5 more sacks to Ware’s sack total and that is not factoring in the total amount of sacks he is going to get on blown assignments create by Wade’s overloading weak-side or confusing the QB’s and OL’s pre-snap reads. I think in the next few weeks we will witness Ware on a tear.
