The pain, the self-loathing, the tiredness...

Is there anything that hurts more than watching the Cowboys lose? Short of family tragedies, I can't think of anything. Especially when the season is only 16 games long and there isn't that much time to sort it out. Now that the numbing sensation is beginning to wear off, it's perhaps a good time to look at some positives:

Defensive Line: The most promising we've seen in years. Yes they tailed off in the second half, but Canty and Spears both look like players and Ferguson had some great moments. Combined with Glover (couldn't really make out what he did wrong on that personal foul), the ever-steady, if overrated (on this board at least) Ellis and Ware, we look to have a solid pass rush over the next few years, as well as a pretty stout run defence.

Dat Nguyen- The guy might be small be he's still capable of some explosive plays.

Anthony Henry- Looks like a true #1 CB to me.

Roy Williams- Except for those last two plays, he looked great, especially at the line of scrimmage.

Offensive Line- Petitti looks like a keeper and the others look solid.

Terry Glenn- If he could only stay healthy, who know what kind of numbers he might put up.

Julius Jones- I think games like last night show as much as the 150-yard glamour games. He kept plugging away and made some timely catches.

As for the bad points, I still feel too tired to go into those....

Why do we feel this way about football? What difference does it make to our daily lives? Why does it affect us so much? Most Cowboy fans will never meet or get to know the players or coaches, yet we are all crushed when they lose and ecstatic when they win. Why do we identify with them so strongly? Could someone please explain.

One of life's true mysteries, yet I'm not sure I'd have it any other way. Passion is always better than indifference, so long as it doesn't manifest itself in violence or clinical depression. I think the players and coaches actually play a very minor role in the whole production. Sure we have all-time favourites (Holt, Irvin, Tolbert, Harper) but I'm sure most of us will go on being Cowboys fans long after Demarcus Ware has retired.

It's a tribal allegiance to a team, a colour (why the uniforms are so important) and a shared bond with thousands of other fans (many, if not most, of whom we'll never meet.) It plays on our natural us-vs-them instinct. Many of these Commanders fans who we ridicule and tell to stay off this site may well be the same people we say good morning to, hold the elevator for and share political opinions with in our day to day lives.

Pain is an essential component of life. Life without pain would effectively mean a life of no happiness, since happiness can only really be measured in proportion to sadness or pain. A life without either extreme would be one of simple routine, which would be the most painful life of all.

You'll get the best (most accurate) answer if you look at the man in the mirror. Start with being on the CowboysZone message board and work your way down.

I've been trying to figure it out my whole life! :)

I agree with those who say the agony of a loss is much greater than the joy of a win. Interesting phenomenon.

For me, football has been a pashion since I was a little kid.

I have always loved the Cowboys since I was a little kid, as long as I can remember.

I loved playing the game, even by myself. I can not tell you how many times I was Tony Dorsett or Drew Pearson in my back yard scoring touchdowns and breaking records as a kid.

As much as I love the game I was never big enough to play past High School. It was my dream, and I know a big part of me lives this dream through the Cowboys.

I have followed every move they have made, and game they have played. As funny as it sounds we all seem a part of the team. What good would it be for them to play, without us fans to cheer them on.

Football is like life in so many ways! It is the ultimate game!

My whole childhood I watched the games with my dad. A lot of great memories.

And as I grew up I watched the whole careers from begining to end of so many great players, like the 3 inducted last night.

They are in my blood!

The fact that it's primarily an autumnal sport plays a role for me. There is no season I love more that autumn and memories of NFL Sundays are tied in with the melancholic feel of falling leaves and a chill in the air. Guess you have to live in Canada or the northern U.S. to really know what I'm saying.

Idols, ... people have had idols in their lives since the Old Testament.

It is not a good thing, but I am as guilty as the next guy when it comes to football.
