The Patriots are closing in on a deal with free agent TE Alge Crumpler.
Crumpler would jump to the top of the depth chart after the losses of Ben Watson and Chris Baker, but he's purely a blocking tight end as this stage of his career. The Pats remain likely to pick up a pass-catching tight end in the second round of the draft.
