I am not talking about balance of offense to defense or to pass to run, I am talking about balancing the budget to better balance the team with experience and youth.
What does the son say every year? "We're not going to be major players in free agency". That and "we like our guys"..........because we like ourselves so much.
Do you think the owner of the Bucs regrets picking up Brady? How about the GM of the Packers picking up Preston Smith and Zadarius Smith? How about the owner of the Chiefs picking up Ingram, Mathieu or Reed? Owner of the Rams getting Stafford, Ramsey, Beckham or Miller?
The problem is they have to learn how to balance the cap budget to be able to afford plug n play players that can immediately help and guard against having a situation like they have at LG. And it's not just free agency but trades as well.
The draft is critical, no question about it, but they've placed all their bets on the draft and outside of the 1st round, they have failed on the OL.
I question whether the Joneses even sit there when the Rams pick up Beckham and Miller thinking about they should have been able to do that. Are they so "we're happy with our guys" and content with that ratings and revenue ranking that they don't even consider improving the team once the season is underway?
Balance begins with evaluation of present players and ones coming up for a contract. The Joneses have not mastered this yet so achieving balance and being able to make the necessary moves in season cannot happen until that happens.
And it is not like they can ignore the impact of other team's players with the success they had with Sanders, Haley, Glover, Robinson, Teague and Owens.
This is a prime example of the difference between a mediocre GM and an exceptional one. The mediocre one sits satisfied as the season begins and announces "we are ready". The exceptional GM never says that because he is always focused on what's missing, not what's there.
