The Problem with a R1 CB...

I'm pretty convinced at this point that the group of players we're targeting at 27 includes the following...

CB's:
- Kevin Johnson
- Byron Jones
- Marcus Peters

Other:
- Owa O'Diggy
- Eric Kendricks

This of course assumes that other guys like Gordon are off the board. But this seems to be the group, with a potential dark horse or 2 in there I'm sure (i.e., Rowe, Harold, Coleman). I love the idea of adding some serious talent to the CB group, since we're very thin at the position, have been bad as a group in previous years, and have both Carr & Claiborne set to depart within a year. But here's the issue... say we select Peters (he's the most likely to be there IMO). This probably means we're more likely to release Carr as a post-June 1 cut. How much better did the 2015 Dallas Cowboys just get? Any at all? I realize that reloading for the future has huge value, but the net gain from this series of transactions doesn't seem as valuable to me as picking one of the UCLA kids.

Of course if we add a R1 CB and keep Carr, it's a different story. This would just greatly improve our quality/depth. Thoughts?

I doubt we willingly unload Carr
Right now all we have at cb is OScan
What drafting a cb high does is that it gives us the ability to negotiate hard with Carr to take a pay cut and stay on
This would be my preference
I think Carr is an above average cb who can help us this year, just not at his current salary

Couldn't agree more. I think he's a CB2 who was being paid high CB1 money, which was really just asking for it from the start (as it relates to negative perception). Adding one of those R1 corners to be the CB3 of this team would be awesome. Groom him to take over for Carr in 2016, and he'd play a ton of snaps in nickel in the meantime.

I would even consider someone like Rowe who could be a FS because in this defense I favor a true FS over zone CB

and Rowe can play CB in a pinch

I'm surprised you're asking how the defense could get better based strictly on CB contributions.
Consider this:

  • We added one the premier pass rushers in the league with Hardy
  • We are adding Lee, one the best LB in the league
  • 2nd year in the system for Ro McClain..and with full camp
  • 2nd year for Demarcus Lawrence should show great improvement
  • 2nd full year for Tyron Crawford...and 1st camp at DT
  • 2nd full year for Hutchins
  • Maybe even help from Ben Gardner...don't know
  • Etc
A lot of things to be optimistic about with the D!

Good question.

Basically, will a 1st round CB be better than Carr for game 1. If not, when. I really thought if they were going to release Carr, that they would have added a mid-tier veteran CB.

If they do release Carr, how much will he get from another team?

In some ways it seems drafting a 1st round CB would give the team leverage to get Carr to take a pay cut; however, on the other hand he might be less inclined to want to stay because he would see that he will not be a starter for long. I guess they could do the Doug Free deal where they promised him that he would be the starter if he took the pay cut.

What's it going to be then, eh?

I do not think any corner save Peters (and that is with a big maybe) is capable of starting immediately and playing at a high level. Sure, they can be forced in there, but that is one of the hardest positions to expect a player to step right in and play like a veteran. So to answer the question, if this is the direction they go and they do not add any other choices in the premium rounds, this defense is not a whole lot better.

It is a tough situation to be in. They need to and will be compelled to add bodies, but there is not likely to be an immediate upgrade and/or payoff.

I get what your saying but I think the upgrade if we get Peters or KJ would be huge compared too Carr. I know he played decent near the end of the year but he's just been really bad last 2 years IMO. I think with a stud CB like Peters (if his heads on straight lol) while also adding Lee and Hardy, our Defense could surprise a lot of ppl.
