The problem with the defense as I see it

Marinelli likes to keep the responsibilities simple on defense. Consequently it makes it easy for an offense to exploit.

The Tampa 2 defense requires everybody flying to the ball, which becomes a massive problem when everyone is heading in the wrong direction. The supposed leader of the secondary is a 3rd year vet, Byron Jones, who has his own issues with taking the wrong angles in run pursuit. Why it isn't the, 'been around the block a few times' Scandrick is beyond me.

Missing Lee is huge as the LB Corp is not only depleted in talent and depth, but in the ability to read the direction that the play is going to head in.

I don't think there is anything Marinelli is going to be able to do to fix this defense this year if the players already are struggling to master even his basic concepts. It needs the offense to step up in the worst way.

Just my 2 cents.

Opponents have figured out how to get a 300+ offensive linemen to actually stay in front of a defender for 3 - 5 seconds and receivers beat the Dallas 'rooks'...not just expecting to always be thrown a perfect pass no matter what, that allows for the receiver to just shield off a defender. Half of the required to actually respond to where the ball is thrown, go uncaught by Dallas...

rocket science, right?

Didn’t you once sell George a rat hat? A poorly made one at that.

Today's offenses run too many intermediate routes what causes confusion in this defense combine that with young players and you'll see receivers running free all day long.
When lees gone not having his range and play recognition just makes it a total killer.

Your only hope is running up against young or weak quarterbacks.
Not a lot on the remaining schedule.

I don't know, I just see receivers running free and a lot of YAC. Running backs & tight ends turning 5 yard gains to 15. How can the loss of 1 player, Lee, have this much effect? Rivers throwing for 400+ yards was an embarrassment.

Agreed.

It’s a great scheme with Rice, Sapp, Booger, Brooks, Barber, Lynch, Jackson

Or

Peppers, Melton, Briggs, Urlacher, Tillman, Jennings.

With talent, his scheme works. But without multiple all pro guys, he’s average.

Doesn't every scheme work when you have all pro guys?

We need more good players. A 320 space eater that requires a double team. Two LBs that can run and tackle and be responsible for a part of the field. A safety that can cover TEs and WRs when required. Too many YAC right now.

We cannot continue to live off FA finds like Irving and often-injured LBe. For all the fair criticism directed at JG and Rod, JJ owns over 50% of the blame.

the problem with the defense as I see is that I CAN SEE IT, I know what they are planning, what they are going to do and I am sitting on my chair at home watching...imagine what great football minds can do to it (and average ones)....

Methuselah had his hey-day in the NFL...time to move on from him....get some fresh ideas,,,,they have A LOT of young guys that they drafted in the last 3 years, so let's get someone a little closer to their age coaching them, someone not their grandfather's age....

Rod, the sunset is over there, go ride off into it....here is a box of chocolates for your trouble....

The problem with the defense——— mediocre to poor talent.
I believe there is plenty of talent in the secondary. Just short on brains.

You have no argument from me regarding lack of talent at LB and 1 tech. Hell we don't even have a 1 tech. An imposter there yes.

The problem with the defense is without Sean Lee (the offense whisper) on the field, it is like a lost deer in the headlights. They don't do their homework light Sean Lee does. Hours of studying tendencies and diagnosing formations is what gives Sean Lee the edge that the others just don't have. He's a smart cookie and the rest rely on him to shout out corrections to be in the best position to prevent what is about to happen. He is very much a general on the field. A defense should not be so dependent on one person and it wouldn't be if the others did their homework like he does.
