It's been my oppinion for a while now that "the process" Garrett has been talking about since day 1 has been primarily about changing the culture of this organization more so than a focus on getting wins quickly or by any means.

Of course you play each game to win.

But I beleive that the focus has been on changing the cultutre of the franchise first and foremost knowing that when that happens the wins will come AND there will be a foundation to build on to produce something lasting.

Starting with the exit of Jimmy Johnson and the hiring of Switzer - the cowboys organization has been a bit of a circus and the sports media has largely looked upon this team as a joke and without respect and looked at Jerry as if he had lost it. And there were many "bad" moves by this organization during that time - and the franchise seemed like it was sinking in quick sand and just grasping at straws every year.

I believe that under Garrett the "quick fix" notion was thrown away as an option and that He and Jerry decided to purge the team and stay focused on creating a new attitude knowing that they would take their lumps and have some tough years with heavy criticism.

I also beleive that this is why Jerry stuck with Garrett - because he knew that Jason was going to have to try to win games with more turnover and more adversity than what a new coach coming into a club would normally be presented with.

Changing the culture of a business or franchise or any organization from one extreme to the other (which is what we are seeing) is extremely difficult.

You have to sell the value of certain things or ideals - ones that were not valued at that time. You have to get people to buy in, then keep them buying even when the results are not coming right away. You have to get people to value certain ideals even when it is not producing the results that you desire. Not everyone will buy in and many will quit when the going gets rough. You have to change a certain belief system as to what is the right way to do things and why you are doing it - that you are doing it because you beleive in it and not just to get isntant gratification. So that you stay with it.

I think right now we are seeing the results of this. Judging by the play on the field and the selfless comments made by the players - The attitude and the heart and soul of this team is about team work and unity and pride and courage and all the words that people use to describe strength of character.

That is such a far cry from where the team was several years ago. And as long as the old attitude remained - bringing it more talent when the culture and attitude is one of entitlement and self promoting - just doesnt work because sooner or later those players can become spoiled and you never have a sense of team.

I know there has been criticism of Garrett's play calling and i'm not going to go there now because this thread isnt really about that and quite frankly I dont know enough inside details to comment intelligently on that.

I do believe that Linehan is having a very positive influence right now as is Rod Marinelli and perhaps that could also be looked at as part of the process - getting the right guys in place to do what they do best and get the most out of utilizing players different skill sets. Also Callahan is doing great work with the young O Line. And our drafting has been better as well.

But as far as The Process goes - Somehow this team has changed from a team full of drama and controversy to one that is resilient and has no quit in them and evokes pride. They have gone from underacheivers to overacheivers and the entire league is now respecting them.

And its more than just improving the talent by adding new players - its the way they play the game, its watching guys that are "all in for each other" and that give 100% out there. And I have to say that in this day of big salary players - i dont think its so common to see and there is something special happening in Big D right now.

Yes, Garrett had to change the culture while operating under many constraints. The big contracts made it impossible to just immediately cut players. Also, he had to do it within the confines of working with Jerry. Parcells came in to change the culture, but his style can't working long with Jerry as the owner.

I think Garrett understand the concept of making moves while letting the boss think it was his idea.

I remember Parcells saying "I cant coach this team, this team is too stupid" and i knew he wasnt talking about the players inability to understand the playbook or football in general.

Ive been the generation whose truly endured this mediocre rut we've been in and to finally see light at the end of the tunnel feels great

10 more games then we can judge the process. if this team fizzles out and finishes, 9-7 and one and done in the playoffs....no one will care about beating Seattle

I'm enjoying the wins, so I hope it continues...it's been a long journey these last 17 years

BP is very close to Jerry I doubt he feels Jerry is stupid. He has said many time he liked working for Jerry and saw the passion Jerry had for winning. This is not to say Jerry has not made mistakes he has but BP tells a different story about Jerry than people here on this board who honestly do not know Jerry nor has ever worked with Jerry.

I dont think he was speaking of jerry in that way either - that was not my intent to imply that.

I think he was speaking about the culture that had permeated throughout the club. And how hard it was to keep those players focused and get players to buy in - for sure some of them did but many just seemed to think they would just walk out on the field and win without puttin in the type of effort required to win week in and week out in the NFL.

BP just got burned out because he has said he regrets leaving Dallas as he did. I think it took a lot out of him.

That Seattle game … that had a real mental affect on me,” Parcells says, referring to the Cowboys’ 21-20 loss to the Seahawks in the 2006 NFC Wild Card round. “I really thought we had a chance to do something. And not only with Seattle, but Chicago the next week. I just thought we had a chance. That one beat me up a little bit.”
Not long after that game, Parcells decided to hang it up, citing a lack of desire to continue, especially with the finish in Seattle still fresh on his mind.
“I was just really upset and saddened by that last game,” Parcells says. “I just didn’t want to try to do it again. I know from coaching all these years, if you’re not mentally geared up for it – it’s hard enough to do it anyway, but if you don’t get really into it, it’s impossible. I just thought enough was enough.”
And although Parcells later returned to the NFL in a front-office role with the Dolphins, he never coached another game from the sideline.
To this day, Parcells still admits he has a few “what-if” moments about leaving the Cowboys after the 2006 season, particularly since they went 13-3 the following year under Wade Phillips.
“I’d say there were some times where I thought to myself, ‘I should’ve tried one more time,’” Parcells remembers. “With that group we had, maybe we could’ve done something more. I don’t know. But I just thought at the time it was the right decision to walk away.”
