The question of trading Flozell in the offseason

Many people would like to think Flozell is untradeable. But I don't see that. He still has value, he plays at a high level, isn't that old, and is one of the best tackles in the nfl.

He is signed until 2007, his salary for 2006 is 5 million, and another 5 million in 2007. Don't know about roster bonuses. There is 2 million in signing bonus charged per year.

I think we're going to draft a tackle high next year, probably in the first round.

To continue concentrating on the line rather than a receiver, what if we could trade Flozell and a mid round pick to Detroit for Roy Williams?

Imagine picking an offensive tackle in the first round, and a guard in the second round. Then drafting a safety in the 3rd round if availability permits.

Our depth chart would look like this

Bold = Future

QB
Bledsoe - Romo - Henson

RB
Jones - Thompson - Barber

FB
Polite?

WR
Johnson
Glenn
Williams
Crayton

TE
Witten - Campbell - Pierce - Ryan

Offensive Line
1st OT - Allen - Johnson - Rivera - Pettiti
Tucker - 2nd OG - Gurode - Peterman - Tucker

That is pretty sound I think

If Peterman doesn't work out we would still have Rivera, which would buy us at least another year. Same thing with the drafted guard and Allen.

Not going to have too much value with a huge contract and coming off major knee surgery.

Major Knee surgery? They don't even know if it was infact an ACL tear at this point...

And Detroit has been having problems with Roy Williams.

LOL Roy Williams is one of the most talented receivers in the NFL, they wouldn't trade him for Flozell and a FIRST round pick, let alone a mid round.

In order for this kind of trade to be triggered, I think the problem with Roy Williams would have to be something to the effect of him sleeping with Matt Millen's wife.

Don't see it happening.

Dude - you are going to have to come to grips with the fact that Flo tore his ACL and is out for the year.

keep Flo, draft the LT, and let the LT develop a couple years, OT is one of the hardest positions for rookies to transition too, that would be the smartest idea IMO

I wish we could somehow land D'Brickshaw Ferguson (LT Virginia) but then that wouldn't allow us to draft one of the top QBs or WRs, aaaaaaah the draft....

..where some fan thinks some other team is going to trade for our sack of beans in Flozell and give us a goose that lays a Golden egg...like Roy Williams..?

Where do people come up with these threads..? And then all the other speculation about next year's draft and who and what..?

Wow..step slowly back from the keyboard, fella.

Flozell is now damaged goods with a high cap figure at this point.

Read that as a potential huge liability for us until his contract ends. Most players don't recover 100 % from kneee surgery until the year following their injury.

For Flozell, that means '07 probably. And Flo wasn't the most agile OT in the NFL before such injury. Chances are, he's going to be less now.

If anything, we're forced to keep him thru '07 and roll the dice he recovers in '06 and we get some of our investment back over that period when his present contract runs dry and then re-evaluate where we are on the OL.

Otherwise, we take a healthy cap hit if we trade or cut him this year or next.

So why would any team give us more than a bag of beans for him..?

Hey..and have another beer for me will yea..?

I do not think we will ever spend a 1st rounder on a O-line player. BP did so back in the 80s but hasn't since to my knowledge. We've done pretty well with waiting until round 2 as well (but some round 2 picks, not so well). BP does a good job coaching guys up to a starting level - he's probably had a little more success with 2nd day linemen than first. A deep OL draft next year means there likely will be a good player available in the 2nd or 3rd. My guess is that BP is looking for another big outside linebacker to pair with Demarcus.

And i think if the right OL came around we WOULD take him because we are getting way too old up front.

I'm no cap expert, but if I remember correctly, Flo is in year 3 of a large 5 year contract. Trading him or cutting him after this season would most likely come at a large price.
