The "positive" thread

Warning, nothing here but positive stuff. This post will be disappointing to chicken little's and pinheads who dont see the big picture.

1) Starting offense has looked outstanding all preseason. Romo, other than 1 or 2 throws has been ultra sharp. The offense is spreading the ball around more on pass plays, and the negative runs on early downs seem to be fewer. The short yardage run game seems more effective too. While the yds per carry isnt great, they arnt getting the 0's, -2's etc et that plagued them so much the past few yrs either.

2) Even with RW not in there, our WR's got open almost at will tonight, as they have all preseason. People wondered if our guys would be able to do anything, but it looks like our 5 of RW, Crayton, Hurd, Austin and Ogletree are gonna be solid. Ogletree has a very bright future in this league.

3) We have the best pair of TE's in football, and the 3rd guy has looked impressive too.

4) Felix Jones is a game changer.

5) Starting defense didnt have a ton of "wow" plays, but gave up very little as well. This despite looking incredibly vanilla to me in terms of the fronts/blitzes and coverages. Most of the blitzes they did run seemed effective though.

6) Backup OL looked pretty good tonight, and Free continued his strong play this preseason. He's starting to look like a potential future starter. Holland had a number of big blocks tonight. McQuistan has been solid.

7) ST had a quality night tonight, and the Buehler/McBriar duo is gonna make a HUGE difference in field position this yr. McBriar has really figured out the art of pinning people deep. And the Crayton/Newman tandem on punt returns looks pretty damn good to me.

9) Love our top-3 CB's. Love our top 4 LB's...Carpenter looks fine in the nickel role. Spencer had his best game of the preseason tonight. Hatcher and Bowen looked more active tonight.

10) The players that have performed the worst and have caused the most problems will clearly be cut.

I feel much more comfortable at WR than start of TC.

I think R Williams will come on this season for us.

And I'm pleased with the progress of Hurd for sure.

And I think we've hit on Ogletree as well.

I like how this team looks.

I can't wait for Tampa in 2 weeks.

The obvious positive to me was punt returning.....there was a couple of good ones from Fair Catch Crayton and one from Newman.

Also a couple of players made the cutting decisions easy for the the coaching staff by cutting themselves.

I couldn't agree more. TC was all about football and team and it shows.

Sounded like Choice got things going a bit later on too!

Spencer and Hatcher getting some pass rush and pressure (and Spencer tackling at LOS it sounds like) is very encouraging. Spencer is a key to the season for sure as he needs to step up like the 1st round pick he is, and not only replace but improve on what an aging Ellis was offering.

Great to here Ogletree stepped up when given the chance as a 1st stringer.

Folk hit a few field goals to help his confidence and McBriar was pinning them back (both these guys are recovering from surgery.

Buehler is what he was advertised as, and starting field position for opponents is usually not very good at all, and it seems to be a risk to run his kicks out the endzone as getting to the 20 isn't a guarantee.

Punt returns sounded WAY better tonight.

Can't judge oline by listening and reading recaps, but your words on Free and Holland (Holland especially as he might be on bubble, though I think it would be a huge mistake to cut him since I thought he held his own in regular season games last year). We only need 4 backup lineman. We will draft another next year and Brewster will return after his red-shirt injury year this year. We just need our 4 backups to be relatively reliable. The 9th spot is open if we keep Preston, Holland, Free.

Second week in a row that our starting offense had a drive of over 90 yards for a TD.

Last week it was 91 yards.

This week it was 94.

Great stuff David

Spencer has gotten better with each game... The run blocking while not great has given us a first down I believe everytime in short yardage (3rd & inches and 4th and inches) I am not 100% sure on that but I believe so.

The starting Oline seems to be better at picking up stunts (I really hope that carries over to the season)

The D looks pretty awesome to me especially being VERY vanilla.

Ogletree to me (atleast) is the 4th best WR on this team

I like the teams starters very much and they look like they are ready.

I really think had this been a regular season game we'd have hung 40 on them easily.

Should have had 20 in the first half.

I didnt see anything from our starting offense in preseason that gives me cause for concern. I'll be shocked if we dont rank at or near the top in yards and points, and I also think TOP will be greatly improved.

I think this might be the best thing about tonight's game... the cover units were apparently solid...

I think the Niners ended up with zero punt return yds...KO return avg was under 19.0

Not to mention honest "warts and all" threads, for a change.

If you tie a thread around a wart then have someone bury it (the thread) where you can't find it, the wart will go away.:D

* I have been very happy with the backup OL men.

* Ratliff is playing like a man possessed. If it carries over to the regular season, he may be the "other" pass rusher opposite Ware that teams must account for.

* Love Brookings play so far. Showing a burst and intelligence in pass rushing.
