SATURDAY MORNING ONE-LINERS

Eyebrows recently were raised when Andre Colona was identified as the agent for Chargers TE Antonio Gates, given that Gates previously was represented by Eugene Parker and Roosevelt Barnes; as it turns out, Gates made the change to Colona in January 2004, months before his breakout season.

Shawne Merriman will make his preseason debut for the Chargers on Sunday against the Rams.

Jets QB Chad Pennington was 9-for-10 in his return from a torn rotator cuff that the team initially said he didn't have.

Vikings WR Troy Williamson caught a 54-yard pass and a 13-yarder for a touchdown against the Jets.

Friday night's preseason contest at FedEx Field gave Commanders QB Patrick Ramsey a chance to get comfortable with all the booing he'll hear this season.

Broncos QB Jake Plummer has a bum left knee (or, as Coach Teflon would describe it, a mild concussion).

Jags coach Jack Del Rio says that RB Fred Taylor will make his preseason debut on Thursday against the Falcons (and you can take that one to the bank, since Del Rio always tells the truth).

Coach Teflon says "there's no chance" that Mo-Clo will play against the 49ers on Saturday.

More than five years later, the Titans finally got that extra yard in the Georgia Dome.

Colts QB Peyton Manning will get 25-30 snaps against the Bears.

BARNES COSTS BOULWARE A COOL MILLION?

Several months back, the Ravens wanted linebacker Peter Boulware to reduce his $6 million salary to a $2 million base and up to $2 million in incentives. Boulware, presumably on the advice of agent Roosevelt Barnes, told G.M. Ozzie to shove it up his Newsome.

At the time, we assumed that Barnes had an unofficial, wink-nod deal lined up elsewhere that would pay Boulware more than that. At a minimum, we assumed that Barnes had generally gauged the market for Boulware's services before turning down the chance to make up to $4 million.

And we've heard that, since then, Barnes' partner, Eugene Parker, has boasted that Boulware will get his $4 million for 2005.

He didn't. And he won't.

With tail tucked firmly into his anal cleft, Boulware has gone back to the Ravens, signing a one-year deal that is believed to be worth $1 million in salary and up to $1 million in incentives.
