A quote by Tex Schram:

:"Tom knew he had authority over the players and everything that had to do with the playing of the game. I had the remainder, There's one thing you must have in football: one continuous line of authority. The players had to understand that, as far as they're concerned, Landry is the boss. They had to understand that the only person I will listen to is Landry. Secondly, they had to understand that I had that kind of backing from Murchison. If everyone doesn't know that there's a definite line of authority, you have chaos."

Unfortunately, those days are gone forever. Jerry loves to play grandpa to his big contract players and they are paid more than the coaches. Players that have the big contracts play whether they play well or not. The NFL has become another show business and the big pay stars draw in the customers and big corporate fat cats.

And yet Super Bowls are still won. In fact, they have been won the most frequently by a team with a single line of authority that has been unquestioned for 20 years.

Head Coaches that have gone to multiple Super Bowls in the 21'st century were those considered to have the most authority among NFL teams., Mike Tomlin? Bill Belicek? Andy Reid?

True... but the Cowboys Braintrust does not do business like those teams. Jerry would like to win another SB but, he likes those commercial corporate sponsors and season ticket holders more.

The question is who's team is it? Who do the players think runs the football team?

In NE, Kraft owns it but it is Belichick's team as far as the players are concerned.

What do you think McCarthy can do without the permission of the owner? Think the players don't know that?

A man has authority or he is not a leader. Parcels had authority he worked for JJ.
JJ runs the show but nobody and I mean nobody held pressers like Bill.
JJ great failure is talent evaluation. He made two good coaching hires.

Unfortunately, winning isn’t the top priority anymore. We only want to win Jethro’s way . That’s a huge hurdle to overcome .

Our team’s biggest problem that must be overcome before a single down is played is the owner and his dysfunctional organization. It makes big money but it doesn’t win in the playoffs.

And don't forget what makes it worse for McCarthy (or any other Cowboys head coach) - the owner is also the general manager.

The authority argument is just one factor. But it's misleading because it doesn't get at the real issues in Dallas. First and foremost, the America's Team legacy has become toxic and counter productive. No other team in the NFL has a cast of former players acting like groupies and sucking up the energy of current players with all their useless advice and the need for their old man egos to be constantly fed.

The other main issue is being overly exposed through the national media and always having to play prime time games. How about a season of nothing but Sunday 1pm EST games? The Cowboys franchise needs a break from their legacy and always having to be important and relevant even when they aren't very good.

And the root of all those issues is the authority problem. Those symptoms you're pointing at are just symptoms of the elephant in the room.

Schramm knew what he had to do when the media was complaining about Landry's lack of success because he knew the players read and watched the media. He, unequivocally, made it Landry's team with that new 10 year contract and effectively ended that.

Every effective GM in the NFL, and all pro sports for that matter, knows their team must answer to one man. If he is not the man, why was he hired?

And smart owners are inaccessible to their players and especially, the media. They have GM's and HC's for a reason.
