i know we played the worst game i can remember this season but can anybody tell me why we didn't get a first down in the third quater when the saints were off sides on 4th and 5 and the ref said that we were 5 inches short what in the heck was that all about because just as soon as they called it we jumped off sides and then romo threw the interception i think it was a boguss call i know it wouldn't have turned the game around but we may would have scored another td please give your input about this

I am not blaming the refs on our loss, so let's get that straight.

I really hate when people do that.

With that said, that was one of the worst officiating jobs I remember in some time. I mean that as a whole because there where calls that did not get called in The saints favor either. Like that face mask on the punt or kickoff.

Just terrible IMO.

The picked-up flag for Pass Interference (on the bomb that a 5yd penalty was called instead) was completely inexplicable.

I think this says it all concerning the Refs, involving mainly Jerry Austin ref team, and this was from a very good broadcaster, that knows the game.

Here are his comments;
RECAP: Mickey with D&M on The Ticket...
Mick:

* There were some strange calls last night. Parcells said he did know that throwing the red flag was a penalty but it in the heat of the moment he went ahead and threw it. I still am a bit baffled by not measuring on the penalty on fourth down. Weird that the illegal contact over-ruled the PI. They decided to pick up the flag. Missing the facemask on the KO return was hard to believe as well as the Karney TD. How it wasn't a TD. The one on Ware for an "Unfootball-like move". What is the difference between that and rushing to the line for a blitz?
* I know that every time I see a Jerry Austin crew, weird stuff happens all over the field. (And he didnt include the pass interference play, where they clearly interfered, and refs, just threw a 5 yard pass interference), (next the running into the kicker was pretty picky and poorly called, then dont forget the play call on riveria & gurode, the defender was already on the ground-and gurode was just keeping him on the ground not to get up and tackle-immediately after that if you notice the refs throw a flag on saints, to correct the bad call on riveria and gurode). Just horrible ref callling. I sure dont want Jerry Austin refering another dallas cowboy game.

Granted the Saints kicked the Cowboys butt all over the field, but your refs need their butt kicked too, that was horrible officiating last night, just pitiful.

And you call yourself NFL with reputable Refs, are you kidding me????

Yea.. the refs were trying to help Dallas but we beat them too.
You guys have too good of a team to not make the playoffs.
You will bounce back and beat the Falcons.

The refs did not cost the cowboys a game nor did it make it so the saints would win a game.

So I am not blaming the refs in that aspect.

However I think fans of both teams, and even just people watching the game who were not fans of either team...

I think everyone could see that it was a terrible officiating game.

don't say dumb stuff like the refs were trying to help dallas, They made mistakes on both teams and saying something stupid like that makes you sound like an eagle or Commanders fan.

I really don't think he's a Saints fan. He's just an anti-Cowboys fan pretending to be one. He gave himself a way when he asked to bet if the Saints could beat the Ravens.

At the very least they should have measured it. Also, on the int call...The guy makes the call as he is looking right at the play, and they pick the flag up for some reason. It is pass int. or it isn't. Doesn't matter that they had an illegal contact as well. STRANGE

yes when i asked this question i'm not blaming the ref's they made bad calls the entire game i think this game was planned to let the saints win i know you can't prove that or do i need to say it but you look at the game bp is a hell of a coach but why don't you see bill ranting and raving to the refs when they make these calls i know his health is not as good as it was but at least put up a fight for your team especially when you know it was a bad call and the one on the kearney td that sucked big time i'm sorry that was not a td that was a gimme they make their rules as the game goes on the part with the ball just crossing the plane sucks i think the ball and the person needs to be in the end zone not just the ball

Well how I looked at it on the interference call is that the illegal contact occurred BEFORE the pass interference. Basically was there contact before there was interference? The refs decided that there was. It didn't matter that the PI was more egregious, it was a matter of which foul happened first.

Agreed. I am a Saints fan and after watching the game my thought was that was a horrible job of officiating, all the way around. All the conspiracy theories drive me nuts, the fact is the officials sometimes blow it. Sometimes it goes your way, sometimes it goes their way, sometimes it screws you both.

Yes, that's understandable, but you can't pick up another flag in this scenario just because something happened after the other infraction. That's like saying a personal foul never occured because the defense jumped offsides.

That was absolutely inexcusable to pick up the flag. That's like giving the advantage to the defense on penalties by the defense.

i thought the officials where bad
if bill thought the penalty was a first down he could have ask for a measurement. the worst call of the game i thought was the call on ware because i still don't understand why that was a penalty, and the face mask they missed on miles against bush. hard to miss a call right in front of you but they managed too.
we got a beating and the officials where not the cause of it. i think the officilas for the league as a whole have been very inconsistant this year but have had very few games where it really mattered, atleast for us. the bengals might have a different view

You're talking about two difference scenarios, though.

In this particular instance, the illegal contact and PI happened on the same play between the same two players. The defender committed two fouls. He shouldn't get penalized twice for that, IMO. The defender committed illegal contact first...was still beat and interfered. The PI flag doesn't override the illegal contact flag, IMO, even though they both occurred.

In the INT call, only way I see the 'boys getting that call is if the other DB on one of the other receivers committed the illegal contact.

As for your scenario, it depends on how both occurred. If the defender jumped offsides, did he commit the personal foul or did another defender? In sports, there are two many variables that would determine the penalty.
