Let me start off by saying I love sports. I love the NFL. I love Cowboys football. I love playing soccer. I watch just about every professional sport out there besides WNBA (and MLB).

Sports have always been a part of my life...and forever will be.

...but do professional sports have an alternative clandestine purpose of distracting the public from what is really important in life?

The video I'm about to post may upset many of yall, but I want to know what you guys think about what Mr. Chomsky has to say...

Only for those who would rather not care about what is "really important" or those who you would rather not care about what is "really important".

To what extent does Coke vs. Pepsi do the same thing?

Burger King vs. McDonalds?

Pizza Hut vs. Dominos?

I've thought about the possibility before but don't think it is so much sports itself.

American culture has been built to be a "one or the other" machine so people are enticed to pick between options and take sides regardless of facts.

Hell, even school girls were subjected to the Backstreet Boys vs. N'Sync mentality.

If sports are built to distract, they are built in such a fashion no more than any other issue. I hate to reference "human nature" because I think it is mostly used as an excuse for behavior that has been deemed unacceptable but we have been conditioned to make quick decisions based on limited information. Good vs. Bad and Right vs. Wrong have huge implications when talking about living in a time when eating the wrong thing kills you or befriending the wrong animals leaves you a mauled mess of flesh on the ground.

Basically it comes done to four possible scenarios.

You choose "good".....and you are right (correct) = Good Outcome.

You choose "bad"......and you are wrong (incorrect) = No harm done.

You choose "bad"......and you are right (correct) = Good Outcome.

You choose "good".....and you are wrong (incorrect) = Worst Outcome.

Sports are no more of a distractor than Ford vs. Chevy, Red vs. Blue or any other simple minded decision.

Not planned, just are what they are.

Now, do some people use their ability to distract to an advantage..........sure.

Why? And, should they?

Those are the better questions.

What's wrong with having an escape from the screwed up world we live in?
