From an NFL Scout who is my neighbor – “There’s a certain GM in the NFL who sees a multi winning Super Bowl QB every day in practice. When he’s in public and he is spotted or people grab him and want to talk football he gives them the Romo test. He asks them their opinion of Tony Romo. If they respond with the framed narrative that ESPN and NBC put out about him of he can’t win big games, etc, he smiles politely and walks away. If, however they understand he is an elite QB on a poor team then he engages them.”

This guy is not my neighbor. I found this on another site.

I have to say I will be implementing this into my routine when discussing football with strangers.

Heh, I said almost exactly that a couple months back...of course it wasn't my neighbor who was the scout. But yeah, looks like someone is passing off my info as theirs.

The Romo Test is the best there is, I always use it when I'm going to discuss football.
I ask them what they think about that Romo guy, if they give me the wrong answer I say "oh, okay" and walk away. Works good.

Yeah that's exactly what I thought when I first read that. Someone ripped your material, man!

Funny, you must be a rational man. :)

I believe it was in my pre-draft thread...which I also nailed the trade up for Claiborne the day before the draft. But yeah, someone definitely took a story I told about one of the GMs I've talked to, modified to fit themselves and changed the wording around. Either way, the information there is valid, the Romo test is a great way to determine if having a conversation with another football fan is a good idea.

Congrats on the Claiborne pick. You should take it as a compliment when people try to take your ideas.

You're a football genius.

Either way. The material was his. And his thread is there if you want to verify anything. We'll all be here waiting for your report.

That is precisely what happened. I found the original post.

I know an NFL GM who has more than one Super Bowl ring on his hand, and gets to watch a future Hall of Fame QB play every Sunday who uses the Romo question to weed out the people who don't know football. He flat out told me when he meets a fan who recognizes him, and starts up a football conversation, he'll immediately ask what they think of Romo. If they say anything but how incredible he is, he automatically knows they don't know what they're talking about.

You can read more here. Couchscout did peg it correctly on Claiborne. Check it out:

Afigueroa22, I want to name the name of this forum and the poster. Please PM it to me. I despise plagiarism. I mean, if they want to credit Couchscout, that's one thing. That's the correct thing to do. Don't steal his information like you were there, like you have his experience or expertise. This is egregious and I take it very seriously. Please PM the details.

Looks like Catch (who is generally a good guy) just used a conglomeration of the stats, facts, and info that is passed around regularly around here, to defend his QB. *cue T.O. tears* I have no problem with it really, I don't pass along this information for any money making purposes, I just want to help Cowboy fans become more informed...which I'd say appears to be the case here.

Okay. If you're okay with it, I'm okay with it. :)

Honestly, I have been doing this for few years. Every once in a while, I get sucked in. More of these types live in the D.C area.

Haha. Almost word for word. If I used the Romo Test here in Houston I would NEVER be able to talk football. :bang2:

Really? This is your litmus test for talking football with people you don't know? They aren't worth talking to unless they share your views on how good/bad Tony Romo has played during his years in Dallas?

Is there room for nuance in this?

My view is Tony is a very good QB -- he had ups and downs -- more ups than downs and overall has been a plus in the grand scheme of things.

To say that the Cowboys have been a "poor team" during Romo's tenure isn't exactly true is it?

Does he work at the corner store? ;)

obviously. I feel that this is very common, people read the first post, race to respond even if there are 15 pages and their comment has basically already been addressed and/or discussed, drives me nuts

seems to me he didnt read the whole first post. if so, he wouldn't have questioned the poster's philosophy, since the poster admitted it wasn't his!
