There is a significant chance that if we were able to draft McFadden that we would do so, probably making either Jones or Barber expendable. Even if we don't draft McFadden, I don't see Jones as the franchise back, and someone would probably offer him good money somewhere else, so I see him as good as gone. This isn't earth shattering news, as I know others have said as much before.

I am wondering if we are keeping Barber somewhat "hidden" by him being the backup running back in the hopes that we could keep him from getting away next year so that we could resign him to a more friendly contract than if he were named the starter now.

I realize we have plenty of cap room now, but lets face it, Romo is going to get his payday, and that is going to punch a pretty good sized hole in the cap cushion we currently enjoy. If memory serves me, Newman is going to get his payday before too long as well. If we resign Barber for a decent price as a backup (even though he might be starting quality) and keep him as a backup to McFadden, that would really be a sweet deal.

I could see a scenario where we might take someone other than McFadden (he not available at our pick) and we could then make Barber the starting back (at backup RB salary) and take another back between the 3rd and 4th rounds.

Very interesting post. But for Jerry its not about the money... he wants to win, yesterday.

He will pay for Barber.

I still wouldn't rule out Michael Turner if we can't get McFadden. There sure was a lot of smoke about Wade liking him this year back when SD was taking trade offers for him.

If we did that, it would allow us to use those two first rounders on other needs.

(I'm still hoping for McFadden, though. ;))

If by some chance McFadden is not there I could think of 3 RB later in the 1st rd who I think will turn out to be very good backs in the NFL. Depending if they all come out next season. Slaton, Rice and Hart. This could be a pretty good draft for RB's depending on who comes out

If we get McFadden ..... Barber will never see the field.

I think Jerry will wait to see how cleveland does ..... if they do better than almost last he will resign Barber .....

If he has a chance to get McFadden ...... Barber and Jones are prolly History unless they want to play for peanuts.

I think if MBIII and Thompson remain Cowboys next year, and Julius Jones departs to another team, that we could draft a running back just about anywhere in the first 5 rounds and have no appreciable letdown from where we are right now. I am not saying Jones is not contributing, but I think his contribution is fairly easily replaced.

If we were to sign Turner, it would free up the draft choices to bolster another position with the first rounders, but I think the cap hit would be greater signing Turner. If Cleveland had the overall number one pick (that might be wishful thinking) I could see us passing on McFadden, dropping down a couple of spots, and drafting a stud player at another position, and signing Turner, but not necessarily in that order. I don't think we would sign Turner and then draft McFadden.

I like this scenario to be honest. Go with Barber and 3rd round rookie rb, use our 2 firsts on two of (CB, OT, WR). Get a NT in round two if there is someone worth taking.

I love Jake Long of Michigan.
